Some of Chicago's RFAs may become UFAs! aka Chicago can't file paperwork correctly

Quote:
Chicago tendered qualifying offers to several key players this week, including Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, however the investigation underway is to determiner whether the qualifying offers were filed correctly.

If not, there is the remote possibility the qualifying offers could be ruled invalid and the players listed above, conceivably, could be deemed unrestricted free agents because of the blunder.

Edit: I'll take Barker and Versteeg please.

And we thought Sather was bad... imagine losing Dubinsky, Callahan, Zherdev, and Korpikoski because we forgot to mail something (Note: very unlikely that happens, but a remote possibility nonetheless).

There is a very low chance this actually happens. TSN is just trying to create a buzz about it.

A big nothing.

The NHL is not going to let them all become UFAs because of an accidental mistake.

Yeah I can't imagine it happening but if it did sign me up for Versteeg or Barker.

Really? It's happened before and the league didn't step in. The Devils messed up qualifying Madden and Rafalski and had to sign them to large contracts to keep them. And I don't see how the PA would let something like that get swept under the rug either.

With the way Chicago has been throwing contracts around, and with Kane, Toews, Keith, and Seabrook(?)'s contracts expiring, Versteeg and Barker may not be on Chi next year regardless of this situation.

The 2000 NJD precedent is VERY bad for Chicago. I'm actually starting to think these guys may hit UFA.

Quote:
5. The New Jersey Devils had an option to renew the contracts of defenceman Brian Rafalski and forward John Madden, but forgot to send out the necessary paperwork.

As a result, both players qualified to become free agents without compensation.

Rafalski was due to earn US$450,000 this season and Madden $550,000. Knowing the Devils, they could have expected 10 percent raises for the next few seasons.

Instead, general manager Lou Lamoriello had to cave in big time. Rafalski got a four-year, $11-million deal. Madden will earn $7 million over the same span.

To make matters worse, an arbitrator ruled that since this was an unusual type of free agency, these salaries can be used as comparables for every young player in the league who goes to arbitration.

It really wouldn't matter, accidental mistake or not, rules weren't followed the player has the right to become a F/A. Lawyers for the players would have a field day with this.

Not just the individual player's lawyer, but more importantly the NHLPA, which is investigating.

I remember when Neil Smith did that with Sheppard. He forgot to include him on the protected list for the waiver draft and Shep was lost. He was a young sniper who could've really helped. Who knows, we might've won the Cup in 1991-92 with him.

The way Dreger talks about it on twitter makes it sound like a pretty big deal.

TSN->

Quote:
Chicago general manager Dale Tallon says the qualifying offers were mailed to the players in time, on June 29th, but says because of the July 1 holiday, some of the players didn't receive them in time.

Additional sources say qualifying offers are not supposed to be mailed.

Overnight delivery via courier and direct fax to the players agent is preferred and certified or registered mail is acceptable only if the other means are unavailable.

Tallon says fax copies of the offers were sent to the league, so he doesn't anticipate any significant fall out.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283634

Tallon is pretty confident that it wont matter....but you never know.

Well I'd assume Tallon is scrambling atm, and telling TSN anything but what he said is asking for trouble.

Tallon: I really screwed up and am about to lose an entire free agency class.

Would not be a good answer.

If this does indeed happen. Trade Rozsival + a winger and go after Versteeg hard! The kid knows how to score, and has a bit of spunk in his game.

In Tallon's defense, he's not the guy mailing stuff. I'd assume he had it prepared in time, gave it to a secretary to send, and the secretary sent it by mail instead of fax/courier.

I mean he's definitely partially to blame and should be responsible for his underlings, but I sincerely doubt it was him to put the packages in the mail.

They should. This is a simple procedure and Tallon didn't even bother to fax the sheets to their agents.

This is pure cutting corners and the Blackhawks should be justly punished for it by losing all RFA rights for the players in question.

So Tallon really thinks it's a good idea to send these offers in the regular mail...and assumed that 2 days (not counting the holiday) was sufficient time to get them there? Seems a bit far fetched, no?

.

if the players didn't get the notices on time, then they are rightfully UFA's.

Doesn't anyone remember the Madden and Rafalski incidents from years ago?

Lou forgot to tender them and while they ended up signing, they got a ton of cash.

The fact of the matter is that any notice that falls on the same date as a holiday actuall becomes due the day before.

They should have taken better care as to make sure that happened.

If not, then the players are free to sign where ever they want and rightfully so.

I'm not so certain. When the news first broke I thought it was purely a story to get readers, and as I was bored I was hooked. Researching the language of the CBA and the Devils situation I'd say if the events transpired as described those guys are going to be UFAs.

When I heard the news the first thing that popped in my head was Devils some 10 years ago with that whole Rafalski / Madded stuff up. Really doubt media is just trying to create a buzz about it.

I'll take Versteeg thanks...
