the 2nd first rounder

it had looked for the longest while like PHI had locked up the division, now NJ is 2 points behind PHI for their division title.

The importance, to the Oilers, being that PHI winning the division means the 1st EDM gets will be between 24th-30th, depending on who wins the cup and where PHI finished in the total standings.

But, should NJ sneak in there and win the division (and NJ does hold the tiebreaker having 2 more wins than PHI) the PHI pick would likely be between 22-24, or 30th should PHI win the Cup.

Remaining schedules:

FOR NJD:

Mar 30 2004, Tue HOME Rangers 7:30 PM ET TSN
Apr 3 2004, Sat AWAY Bruins 1:00 PM ET
Apr 4 2004, Sun HOME Bruins 1:00 PM ET

FOR PHI:

Apr 1 2004, Thu AWAY Canadiens 7:30 PM ET RDS
Apr 2 2004, Fri HOME Senators 7:00 PM ET
Apr 4 2004, Sun AWAY Islanders 1:00 PM ET TSN

I know. For a long while, Philly looked like they were in complete control of their division and would finish #2 in the conference. New Jersey has made quite the climb as well... riding on the coattails of Gomez and Elias. Geez, Gomez has been on quite the tear.

Philly had a good lead but the Devs managed to win their games in hand. This pick is so important if the Oil want to move up in the draft, the teams with the picks in that range (Ott, NJ, Col, Det...) are good at the table and drafting ahead of them will make a big difference.

it's interesting how a few months changes ones perspective. when the oil made the trade with philly we all knew that the pick would be late in the first round. most people also expected anaheim to finally get their game together and pull into a playoff spot meaning a mid to late 1st rounder if they had done the deal with the ducks. 4 months later and if lowe had done the anaheim deal we'd have a top 10 pick, plus our own pick in the mid first round. i don't say that to mean that lowe should have done the anaheim deal, but it's interesting to look back at what might have been.

This topic has been addressed a number of all times.. no one knows how good Anaheim would have been with Comrie added to the lineup. Likewise, we got back an additional 3rd round pick in this deal and a better prospect (IMO). Lowe can't read the future and I still think he made the correct choice..

Yeah, you're right, but that deal might not of even included a 1st, or Comrie could of turned the team around...there are too many variables that could affect it, so there's really no way to debate it. But yeah a top ten pick would be pretty sweet.

EDIT: Cerebral beat me to it :p
