Can't say I didn't see this coming but not at who we sent the other way. Kudos Mr. Lombardi.

I would still rather have Gabby but Smyth is a solid stand up guy, not a savior, but a good guy to throw into the mix.

Better than nothing.

I think I may be truly excited going into a season for the first time since the Palffy-Alison-Deadmarsh days.

I can't believe he got them to take Priessing

Dean - you are THE MAN
Isn't it great for all of us to be in agreement for once?

In a way it sucks that the trade happened this early in the off season....now it seems like a long time to wait until training camp.

My bad. But I still don't get how and when a bonus becomes "impossible to achieve." Let's say we're talking about Doughty's Calder bonus for example. He was nominated so when does that bonus count? When he doesn't win it? And what year does that count towards?

I guess that will have to do....I can always complain that Dean has yet to sign Johnson and Frolov......that will kill this love fest going on.

I also think that Smyth will be a huge help to Brown with his leadership qualities. Plus he will show the kids how to drive to the net and pay the price to score those ugly goals that the team needs.

That's the next big step...I still think JJ is being shopped though for some reason.

Unless a defenseman is coming back or Dean is still trying to sign a UFA dman, I can't imagine Dean going in to next season with two open spots on the dcore.

I'm really hoping Johnson stays now that we our LW for the near future and another vet dman.

Sign Biron and we're done and in the playoffs. Maybe another vet 4th liner to round things out. Hell, just bring Army back and keep Zeiler far far away.

Don't forget about Jack Johnson killing Smyth a few years ago.

Its not very long though, and in the final year when the cap hit might be a problem, the fact that he is payed half that amount makes him extremely tradeable to a team with an internal cash cap that is below or around the cap floor. Contract will not be a problem in the long run, though it MIGHT put us out of any potential Kovie race if he does make it to UFA.

Only the top 3 finalists get a bonus for the Calder (does not include Doughty). Usually incentive bonuses are for games played (obviously if you miss a lot of games this bonus becomes impossible to reach about 2/3rds of the way through the year), being in the top of ice time.....scoring a pre-determined amount of goals/assists/points. There are a few other categories...but you get the idea.

Most bonuses never really become "impossible" to achieve until the last few weeks of the season...but they are earned as they are accomplished.....in the year they are accomplished. So if a bonus is earned and puts the team over the cap the amount the team goes over the cap is subtracted from the next year's cap.....I hope that makes sense???

Not really....because as we saw this year it is not that difficult to clear cap space if you really want to.

I have let this trade percolate.

This is not an isolated trade. This is a statement.

Williams, Scuderi and Smyth are statements. Tough, no stop, all go players who leave it all on the ice. Each has question marks. Williams is injury history. Scuderi is lack of offense. Smyth is age. It's not perfect. There is risk...but, the risk is calculated. Dean has not given the team a face lift but he is giving it a soul.

Specifically with Smyth, I am reminded of Adam Deadmarsh. He was the heart and soul of the team. Smyth is the same player. He is NJ's Langenbrunner.

There is also the issue of "chemistry". For anyone who has ever been part of a team, you understand that certain "personality" types are a necessary component of synergy between teammates that maximizes performance. Warriors and martyrs are critical to success. They bring unity of purpose. They bring execution. There was a "gap" with the Kings. On one end, while Kopitar, Frolov, Brown and the kids understand the necessary commitment and hear it preached, each lacked and lacks leadership. They are young soldiers, not warriors. Zeus, Stoll, Armstrong, and Calder are role players but they are neither leaders nor heroes. Smyth is a leader. He is a warrior. He is a hero.

There are no guarantees, not of the playoffs or success. But this team is now alive. It has a pulse. It has a beating heart. The beast's eyes are opening...opening with a scowl.
