Although... calling Quincey nothing more than a 4th defenseman is ludicrous. He's a serviceable #2 and pretty darn good #3 that could potentially be a legitimate top pairing guy. Even so, this deal was still very worth it. There was no fleecing, it was a matter of Colorado a big contract and getting a very good young defenseman back. We happen to have plenty of them so it works out for everybody.
I'm on board w/ this deal also for the fact that there is now a JOB to be won on defense in camp. I'm a big fan of drewiske and personally i'm hoping he gets that last spot. They played him on the PP at the end of the year and i thought he looked pretty good out there. I love this deal for so many reasons.
Another couple of minutes and I would have been in bed and not seen this until tomorrow morning. Good deal for both teams. I love Kyle Quincey, but if Smyth is half decent he's a great fit. Better than the finesse guys - Gaborik, Havlat, etc. - IMO. (Not Hossa though.) Sign Johnson and Frolov and we are off to the races.
Top 9 looks really solid!!! Maybe we can go after a 2nd line center that can be an upgrade over Stoll. I like Stoll and I wanted Kovalev, but with this trade I think our weakest point is 2nd lin center.
You have to consider that even if KQ had a good season in 09/10, he was going to be due for a big raise right after Jack and right before Drew. With Greene and Scuderi's contracts already in play + Hickey coming in on an entry level deal....not to mention Quick possibly emerging from his ELD as the #1....it was going to get complicated back there, doughwise.
Kings needed a winger, they identified a great need for the team, a GREAT need for the locker room, and pretty much the perfect all-around player for where this club is right now in the maturation process.
I hope he does well for you guys. Smyth was good for us even though the rest of the team sucked hard. In some ways, I'm glad he's gone to a team with a brighter potential, as Edmonton screwed him over and Colorado is trying to rebuild (gonna be a long four years). You'll love him for his spirit and energy.
As for the Avs being hosed, I would disagree. There aren't many teams in the league who can afford a 60-point gritty player who has a cap hit of 6.25 million a season for three more years. LA was really the only option outside of maybe Atlanta or the Isles.
Wow, im actually shocked. I expected to come to the Kings board and see everyone hating this deal. Smyth is injury prone and big time on the decline and is making 6.25 mil a season right now. Really a brutal contract at this point of his career. I'm surprised that Colorado even got back that much in a trade. Even if the Kings didnt give up much they still got back Smyth's contract and that wasnt good.
