Happy Birthday America.

Hope everyone has a good day. I'm going to the Giants game to see Lincecum pitch. I hope he does well.

Hey, how come I didn't get a Happy Birthday Canada thread on Wednesday. Jerks.

Anyway, hope everyone has a good weekend, and fireworks are all fun and games until someone blows their hand off (or knocks out power to their block like my friend's dad did once)

I'll be "chilling" at home...probably do a little BBQ action before walking outside to watch the fireworks at the park next door.

Don't you remember?

Myself, I'll actually be thinking of how great our country is when I'm watching the fireworks ... I'm not one of those self-loathing American libs ... I have balls (and something called pride).

I just have to bring this up cause I'm a nerd and it's interesting, but

The decleration of independance was signed on July 2nd and Read to the people on July 8th.

John Adams said that July 2nd will be a day that will be celebrated and remembered for all time.

Nothing really happened on July 4th, but the date that was inked onto the decleration of indepence, so that's why we celebrate independance day on the 4th and not the 2nd.

Happy birthday to USA! Remember not to party too hard because you are broke, so instead of firing those fireworks enjoy the U.S. National Dept Counter at http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/

Current count is as of 04 Jul 2009 at 01:36:01 PM GMT : $11,495,929,858,269.39

each citizen's share of this debt is $37,508.79

The fourth stanza of Francis Scott Key's famous poem (that few know more than the first stanza):

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation,
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n - rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, for our cause is just,
And this be our motto--"In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
