Dammit Callahan also? I figured Zherdev was going that route. Cally is going to cash in.

It's a good thing in one regard. Means that they can't sign any offer sheets. Hopefully we can get them both signed before the hearings.

At least it protects them from offer sheets..

on the other hand, I hope guys like Dubi and Korps aren't going because they're close to re-signing...

There's no guarantee either player makes it to arbitration...deals can get done before the hearing.

Zherdev and Callahan filing for salary arbitration means both players will be Rangers unless the Rangers don't like the reward and they walk away. You would except the Rangers and Callahan's agent Stephen Bartlett will reach an agreement before the hearing date. Zherdev filing indicates he wants to play in NY and in the NHL. In Zherdev's case, it would be a 1 year award because he is 1 year away from group III UFA status.

Chris Higgins was arbitration eligible but he didn't file.

Wow, hes only one year away from being a UFA? Well thats not good if he has a great season, we will never be able to resign him.

He can't. Well, not unless he actually goes to arbitration, we don't like the award and let him go. But I don't see that happening.

I thought that the deal awarded was 1 year then the player becomes UFA. Isnt that how Bouwmeester ended up UFA at age 26?

Yeah it gives him motivation to have a great season and cash in next summer. If it's not with the Rangers, then with another team. If he has a great season, so will the Rangers.

7 years NHL service or 27 years old. Zherdev reaches 7 years with 09-10.

I bet he signs before arbitration. I think both sides would like to avoid a messy process ultimately, this just forces the contract issue. Cally's a good kid and the Rangers are usually classy, though I hate to throw that cliche around.

Ya I don't care about a 50+ point getter who was 2nd in Goals and Assists on our roster last season.

Team elected salary arbitration deadline is on Monday. The Rangers only had 3 eligible players and two filed. They are not taking Higgins to arbitration. Higgins will probably sign his $1.9 million QO with the possibility of becoming a group III next summer when is 27 years old if he does not reach a long term deal with the NYRS before next July 1. He has a tough agent in Matt Keator who takes every penny available when his players become group III's.

I expect zherdev to get somewhere between 3 and 4 mil in arbitration. He made just over 3 mil last year and really cant go down in salary but didnt have a great year so I wouldn't expect much of an increase.
Cally on the other hand now gets some leverage in negotiations because the rangers probably dont want to take him to abirtration so they are aching to get a deal done prior to the healing. I think he will end up with a contract for about 2.5 mil.
This means we will have about 8 million in cap space to sign higgins, duby, and korps and fill out the rest of our roster.

In Callahan's case do you think his agent recommended it because he didn't want to get an offer sheet and have the Rangers be liable to match it and lose out on a better deal? I think Callahan is the kind of player who wants to stay in NY and wants to help the team when he can. If protecting himself from offer sheets helps the Rangers I don't have a problem with it at all. He will get signed before arbitration.

Zherdev's probably getting low balled by Glen, they might not be far off but he may think he is worth a little more. Either way it shows that he wants to stay in NY as well. Hopefully they clear this up and it isn't a big problem.
