Faceoff Specialist to Philadelphia

Flyers need a defensively responsible 3rd line center to fill out their lineup. Can't be too expensive, just a guy that can win faceoffs, kill penalties, and play defense. Will probably playing with some combination of Laperriere, Carcillo, Asham, or Powe. What would it take to bring a FA guy like Bonk, or Malhotra? Or if not, who else is available via trade?

For some weird reason Ray Shero chose not to re-sign Zigomanis, theres your dirt cheap faceoff specialist right there. Early in the season when he was healthy the pens were using him as a 4th line center and a PK'r but also bringing him out for key draws and even on the PP to win the first draw. He did that job extremely well.

Malhotra is a UFA but I don't think he is looking to sign with a team that has him slotted in the 3rd/4th line role. I think someone like Mike Zigmonais (UFA) can be had for relatively cheap (750K).

If you're looking strictly for a FO specialist, and not necessarally PKer, Wellwood would fit perfectly for you. You could probably get him for Carle and save some salary in the process.

Marcel Goc sounds perfect for what you're looking for. FA, great at faceoffs and defensively, sucks offensively. Could be had for real cheap, too.

Stephane Yelle could be an option as well.

Blair Betts is still a UFA. He's a great PKer and good on FO's.

I dont even want to think about Yeller not being in the B's uni next year. It looks like thats how its gonna be tho. He was great for the bruins last year, 4th liner, great stay at home PK, took key faceoffs and at times would be the guy taking the draw over Savard. Cheap too, under 1 mill.

I have a feeling the Flyers are going to keep Giroux at center. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense because of the way the lineup is center heavy, but in my opinion Giroux's vision and playmaking ability are off the map as a center. And he makes Briere better, because without Giroux in the middle Briere looked pretty much lost on the wing.

I think the Flyers will add a winger, instead. Laperriere, Kalinski or Ross (or even Powe) could handle fourth-line center duties.

Why does Todd Bertuzzi sound perfect for the Flyers? If they have reservations, they could always ask Pronger for his advice, since they played together in Anaheim.

They can wait till training camp when these type of players will be put on waivers. For example I wouldent be surprised if Ryan Jhonson out of Vancouver was waived after training camp. Not because he isnt a valuable member of the team and a excellent player in that role(good team member, one of the top faceoff specialists, excellent PK and just the perfect 3rd-4th line guy) but because he would get bumped out by the young guys like Hodgson. He is too good to not be playing in the NHL but Vancouver has allot of depth and with the cap and young players who are going to be fighting for a spot in the lineup he might just become a victim of the numbers game..a bit like Pettinger last year though he is deffenitly a more valuable player than Pettinger because he fills that 4th line, 2nd pk unit and fill in for the 3rd line spot job so well. Oh and he is probably the best shot blocker in the league by a wide margin.(like I said if say Sundin resigns and Hodgson is good enough to play and the team doesnt want him going back to the OHL than a good player like Jhonson will get bumped of the team)

In anycase there should be lots of very good players that can fill these types of rolls waived after training camp.

Stevens has said he wants to keep him at Centre, which makes a guy like Zigomanis or Goc or Betts more likely options than Malhotra.

Or someone could take the draw for Giroux and the swap to the wing

How about the person that you already signed in Lappy?

He centered the line with the Two Cody's for part of the season last year. He can play center, and is great defensively.

Marcel Goc is available as the sharks just let him go. He pretty much is described by the initial post in this thread.

The OP's described need is Goc to a tee. He is a decent skater as well.

I wouldn't say he "sucks offensively". He's quite capable on the boards deep in the offensive zone, and can create chances. Unfortunately, "hands of stone" is barely adequate to describe his total inability to finish.
