Mark Bell for 3rd line LW

We could probably sign this guy for cheap. Somewhere around 800K. I know he had the DUI deal but the guy would be an excellent fit on the 3rd line with Handzus and Simmonds. He was down in the AHL the last 2 seasons but his stats at the pro level are decent. Plus he's only 29.

Smyth-Kopitar-Williams
Frolov-Stoll-Brown
Bell-Handzus-Simmonds
Richardson-Lewis-Westgarth

Other than the DUI which he is most likely over, I never heard anything about the guy being a locker room cancer.

EDIT: just an idea. I always liked the way the guy played. What sucks is because of 1 mistake the guy's career could be ruined. Heatley killed a guy and you didn't see him get thrown in the minors.

This is the best part of the post. What makes you think the drinking problem is over? What makes you think he'll play at an NHL level?

I highly, highly doubt DL has any interest let alone any other team in the NHL.

if there were ever a role on this roster where character was absolutely key, it'd be in one of those heart and soul slots... Mark Bell is Tatooine.

Rather have Moller or preferably Teddy playing that spot and gaining experience. Regardless if we keep them in the end they need to progress. Its just good asset management. Moller can go down to the AHL and progress there. Purcell needs to show he can play in the NHL or his value declines to us.

Probably because Mark Bell was addicted to alcohol, whereas Heatley isn't addicted to killing people.

Just because you got a DUI doesn't mean you have a drinking problem.

No thanks.

Too bad Grier doesn't play left wing. He's right wing right? Can you imagine a Grier-Handzus-Simmonds 3rd line! WOW, that would be one of the best stopper lines in the league.

Looking at this link: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=433516&navid=DL

The only plausible left wings for the 3rd line left are Pyatt, Axelsson and Moen. I hope DL is going after Moen. Perfect fit IMO.

You figure if he couldn't make the cut on the Leafs last season, he's gonna have a hard time getting a one way deal. The DUI is one thing, but I think his general play is a bigger concern/reason he was stuck in the minors last year.

You hate to bury a guy's career when he hasn't even turned 29 yet, but his decline in production is pretty alarming. You stated that you "liked how he played." The worrisome part is the past tense of that statement. Bell looked pretty invisible with the Sharks/Leafs. At this point, there are probably better internal options. Never anything wrong about kicking the tires, but I wouldn't extend a guarenteed contract his way.

So you replace Kyle Calder with Kyle Calder v.2? No thanks. Go for Moen or someone from the pipeline who is ready to shine (Clune or Cliche for example).

Bell is a power forward. Calder is a grinder?

Bell is far from a power forward. He doesn't play like one anymore. He falls in the same category as Taylor Pyatt. Big guy that doesn't use his body much. Kind of like Brad Isbister, people still wait for them to crack out of their shell.

Personally, I'd give Bell a shot but DL's into guys with medical issues not psychological ones.

I remember when Kyle Calder & Mark Bell were the future of the Blackhawks 8-9 yrs ago.

Both are now out of the league.

They were part of the A-B-C line. Arnason, Bell and Calder. The glory days of the Hawks. Man did they have it bad. Lot of poor drafts as well (Yabukov and Vorobiev anyone?). Mike Smith set them back many years.

I am pretty certain Bell has had 2 DUIs, not 3. 1 in juniors and 1 the day after he was traded to San Jose. The 2nd one was BS that they called it a "hit and run." He rear ended a guy at a stop sign, got out of his car, and passed out on the sidewalk. He hardly ran.

Bell definitely deserves a 2nd chance in the NHL. He was an emerging power forward when he was traded for Preissing in the Havlat trade.

The Kings are the kind of team in a good position to give a guy like Bell that chance. Sign him to a 2 way minimum deal. Best case scenario: you get a 40-50 point 2nd liner for dirt cheap. Worst case scenario: he goes to the minors as a role player. You really can't lose.
