I like the idea, but a 2nd seems a bit high to me. Maybe add a prospect to balance things out.

Counter Proposal:

Pominville + Gerbe + 3rd for Kaberle + 5th

Of course, this would be contingent upon us making a separate deal to alleviate the logjam on defense and replacing Pominville as a top-6 RW.

If we were to deal for Kaberle though, I can't see us offering a forward. We'd need to clear out the D-man logjam (and a pre-emptive no to trading Myers), as well as moving some salary.

If Toronto added Stempniak and Buffalo added a D-man (preferably Lydman or Tallinder for salary purposes), I think it would make more sense from a Buffalo perspective because there wouldn't be the huge hole at RW--with both Kotalik and Afinogenov gone (and not replaced) our depth at wings has significantly decreased.

But if the Leafs are stockpiled at defense, then clearly they wouldn't want to simply swap out a defenseman, which means the teams just don't make good trading partners.
I'd have to agree that it would be though for our teams to move because we seem to have the same problem on the blue line. I will not though that if you guys were intersted in Stempniak he could probably be had for cheap.

now this trade would go pretty good in a rebuilding process for toronto and good for a defence lacking buffalo.

I don't necessarily agree. With the Sabres needing wingers, I could see Kaberle + wingers being moved. How about...

To Buf: Kaberle / Stempniak + 3rd pk in 10

to Tor: Hecht / Stafford / Ennis

I think this deal is fairly even. With half of us saying not bad, and the other half split between saying the Leafs wouldnt, and some saying Poms is worth more.

This does mean the Sabres would then move Tallinder and/or lydman ofcourse. And most likely for a winger. I think I would do this deal because a Kaberle on the Sabres (back end puck moving and scoring) would be more valuable than Poms.

If we could move Tallinder + Poms +2nd rounder for Kaberle + Stemps I would sign on the dotted line. Especially with Lee being from Buffalo!

Bad trading partners in this scenario, though just the trade as looked at in a vacuum looks pretty even.

The issue is that the Sabres have enough defensemen already and not enough goalscorers, so it would make little sense to give up Poms. He had a rough season, but personally I think he bounces back.

Well, then you obviously haven't seen many proposals on these boards.

I don't think it's really that bad proposal, but I'm quite sure Leafs wouldn't do this.

Well actually, considering the rumored trade discussions at the draft for Kessel...Burke is probably going to ask a lot to move Kaberle anywhere. Which probably means he's not going anywhere.

Not really. He's a 60 point d-man on a good team. How many of those are available for 4.25M?

The Sabres could desperately use his ability to start the rush, make smart outlet passes, and work the power play. The deal in the OP is pretty close, maybe with a 3rd instead of a 2nd.

Then they can move one of their extra D-men to pick up a top-six winger.

i think if Lydman or Tallinder could fetch a top 6 W they'd be gone by now.

On their own they can't, unless it's someone that's on the outs, like Cheechoo.

But packaged with a pick and/or prospect they could.

If you want to dump Hecht, upgrade that pick to a 1st and you've got a deal.

Toronto - Buffalo (Kaberle)

To Toronto:

- Drew Stafford
- Jochen Hecht
- Daniel Paille
- 1st Round Pick

To Buffalo:

- Tomas Kaberle
- Lee Stempniak

If Toronto wants to replace Kaberle with another D-Man, feel free to replace Hecht with Tallinder.

Sold. Keep Hecht and Tallinder.

Stafford + Paille + 1st is plenty.

No. Not giving up Stafford. Try Pommer instead.

No. Keep Kaberle. Trading multiple assets like that is contrary to how Buffalo must operate. They can't spend to replace them. It would drain the system depth. Bad Business and self destructive.

I'm suprised Burke wouldn't try to land Jack Johnson for Kaberle. He's right up his alley; tough, American, a mother****er.

I'd love it if Burke got JMFJ.
