Yeah, because who needs players with heart and passion for the city and the team they play for? Neil took 300K less to sign with the Sens. We should trade him for Zherdev. Donovan and his 650K works too hard, and never complains even when they scratch him for 3 or 4 games in a row? We can't have that type of positive attitude around.

I think:

Kelly would clear waivers, 29 takers on re-entry. He has negative, but not too negative of a value

Ruutu would get claimed on waivers, probably worth a pick of some sort, but I think we keep him

Schubert would also be claimed (he is pretty cheap), again, 3-4th rounder

Donovan is barely above the league minimum, and worth almost nothing (at the trade deadline he would be worth something I think) but isn't overpaid

Niel apparantly was offered more by NY and Toronto, so probably some sort of late round pick.

Except for Schubert, all of those players play with a lot of heart. I think Kelly even deserves an "A".

how is your 4.5 million 3rd line center not in this mix?

You seriously think Neil's contract is good?

Does Schubert still play D? I seem to remember he was a reasonably reliable defensive defenceman..

Because people who follow hockey realize the value of Fisher. Overpaid, yes. However Ottawa has him, and 29 other GMs would love a Fisher on their team.

Kelly does not have negative value, he's a 30 point shutdown centerman who brings excellent PKing skills to the table. He was a soon-to-be free agent when the deal was made and that he definatly could've gotten more than 2.1M on the open market

We need his PK skills now that Antoine Vermette is gone

at about 1 million less, i'd agree with you. I think fisher is a great hockey player, but at the same time, he is getting paid top 6 money for a bottom 6 role.

If I thought in back and white, then no the contract is overpayment. However I can see in grey, and this season when the Sens were sucking it hard, Neil would work his ass off, run over somebody, get in a fight and then Hartsburg would sit him for 30 minutes. 2 mill on a 56 mill cap is not bad at all. Thats 1/27 of the cap on a 22-24 man roster, seems fair for a guy who would do anything he could for your team.

Plus since it is a business, if you show loyalty to your players, it shows around the league.

Not that it's a big difference, but Fisher's cap hit is 4.2 and I believe that hit goes down after this year no?

He is the second line center first of all. His production has slipped but so has the entire team's since the cup run. While he may not be the biggest offensive threat his defensive play, speed, shot, physicality and passionate play make him able to gel with skilled players.

Whether he plays with Alfredsson or Kovalev next year I think it's safe to say we will be seeing the Fisher pre-cup run on a more consistent basis.

Might I add that your top line centre, Tim Connolly, while clearly more talented on the offensive side of the puck than Mike Fisher, is making 4.5 million as well despite not having a 20 goal season to his name, has not played a full season since 2003, and his career high in points beats Fisher's by only 7.

This is not a shot at Connolly but pointing out that Mike Fisher does deserve this salary as he is in the prime of his career.

Not at 4.5 they wouldn't. 4 maybe, high 3 likely, IMO.
