Gustavson signs for half of Gilroy???

From all accounts Gustavson is a much better prospect playing in the second best league in the world and plays the most important position on the ice.

Gilroy is old (in terms of being a prospect) and projects to be probably a second or third pairing dman.

Someone explain why Sather had to pay so much more than Burke. I am pretty sure that both guys were coveted.

probably because goalies are more of a risk than a defenseman to be a success.

Because most teams arent looking for goalies while all would have loved to add a d-man like Gilroy.

Because Sather is a moron and Burke walks on water. Is that the answer you were looking for?

There is a thing in the CBA called an entry level system. Players at certain ages fall under that system

18-21 sign 3 year deals
22-23 sign 2 year deals
24 sign 1 year deals

Gilroy was not subject to that system thus he was able to get more guaranteed money while the Swedish goalie signed a 1 year ELC.

FYI,Gilroy was the most coveted college/european free agent this spring/summer. Burke saw him play many times at BU. Burke offered a similar contract to the Rangers but didn't offer a one way deal. ELC's are two way deals. Everyone thought Gilroy was going to be a Leaf.

Gilroy got 2 years/$3.5 million.
09-10-$1.4 million($250,000 signing bonus and $1.15 million salary)
10-11-$2.1 million salary

$1.75 million cap #

Because you guys have Lundqvist and I'm pretty sure Gustavsson has aspirations to be a number 1 some day.

Sather is always willing to spend "free" money. He did the same thing with Pck--gave him the maximum. Hopefully, the bet on Gilroy will work out better.

I think you don't understand--the original poster is not complaining Gustavsson signing with Toronto, it's all about the fact that he signed for about 1/2 of Gilroy.

The Rangers have The King. Maybe the Monster will work out (almost) as well.

Oh, my mistake. It's been explained in this thread - he is 24 and the CBA requires we sign him to an entry level deal. Sather is not a moron and Burke isn't turning water into wine here or anything.

And if he can be half of Lundqvist, we got a steal.

Considering our goaltending situation last year, I'll consider that an upgrade.

Incidentally, Dubielewicz has entered Toronto folklore after his SO victory vs the Devils in '07 steered the Isles into the playoffs over the Leafs. I hate that man.

Do you have any knowledge at all what goes on? There was about 4x as many teams interested in Gilroy as there was Gustavson..thats a start, run from there and do research.

Anyway, no reason for this thread. Search back and find a Gilroy thread to discuss this minor discussion.
