we retire numbers to much (or atleast talk about it to often). i figured it was done for special players that had WON championships with the club. seeing as we haven't won s*** i don't see why any of them are retired. Honored yes, retired no but hey what do i know?

I believe Dave Hutchinson wore #4 but I don't know if he was the last one previous to Blake or not.

I hate to break it to all the Blake-haters, but I'm fairly certain Kings' management wouldn't waste the time discussing retiring Blake's #4. (God knows they waste enough time on other things!).

To think that the Kings are "trying to get back at Blake by giving out his #4" just means you are trying to analyze this way, WAY too much, and it also ignors the fact that #4 is a common number for defensemen.

There is no way #4 should be retired, but trying to show a connection between a new defenseman getting #4 = a F U to Blake, just shows that you can't let Blake go - he's been gone for over a year, he's moved on - the Blake-haters should do the same.

Disagree. An issue like this HAS TO BE discussed (not formally retiring the number, but keeping it out of circulation for the time being).

(If the website is accurate) I have no doubt there was an upper-level decision that Blake-isn't-that-special.

Which pleases me, because it's right.

Here in LA we have no cups so we make a big deal about smaller things. We make nicknames for dramatic comeback games even if they're regular season games that mean nothing. We make statues of guys and put them in front of arenas that they never played in. The most exciting times for us happen at the draft and the trade deadline.

It's our way of finding the bright side of a stinking wet turd.

I disagree. Like I said before, do you thing Boston showed an F-U to Esposito by allowing Bourque to wear #7? I think unless it's someone like Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky or Gordie Howe, teams will allow players to wear numbers because they usually don't know who's number they are going to retire until years later. If they decide to retire a number and someone's already wearing it, that player will give up the number no questions asked.....

Wait until Kopitar retires and make it a joint jersey retirement along with Simmer... This way not only does the Triple Crown stay in the rafters for all history...but we also add a superstar along with the new guard...

I dont think Blake's number will be retired in LA when he goes. Now San Jose...those suckers just might. LA will send him a commemorative watch and signed photo of Drew Doughty.

I think what the Dodgers do is appropriate. Get into the Hall, you get your number retired. The only exception for the Dodgers was Jim Gilliam who won 4 World Series in 14 seasons with the club and was killed while he was a coach for the Dodgers. Everyone else the Dodgers retired is in the HOF and the Kings should adopt the same policy.

As long as 4 isn't in the rafters, I am cool with anything. I am glad Scuderi has #4.

So we won't retire the number of the franchise's best defenseman, who was a top-4 defenseman in his prime?

Now even thou I don't boo I do yell at the Zebra's alot! Even on TV... Butt for Blakey I could make an exception!
He went from my fave King to a despised traitor only interested in himself! He has his own face tattooed on his butt!
Or so I heard when his towel blew off after surfing when he was changing by the side of the road!

And I am still going to take off his name on my jersey and put on Scudds now... Might need something to start a fire with,
when I go camping ... does rayon burn?

I always thought it should be:

Doughty #2
Johnson #3
Hickey #4

looks wicked and, of course, it is their draft position as well.
