News release...

Quote:
Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has acquired goaltender Alex Auld from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for San Jose’s sixth-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft (previously acquired).

“Alex is a proven NHL veteran with a track record of success in this league,” said Nieuwendyk. “He has size and ability, and we expect him to be an excellent goaltender for us.”

He will give you guys a solid alternative to Turco if he starts playing poorly. He's also capable of carrying a team for several weeks if need be.

The only reason he was traded is because Brian Elliot played his way out of the minors and needs to be in the NHL to continue his development. We couldn't carry 3 goalies, but in terms of a backup, Auld brings all you would expect to the table and then some.

You got a really good backup who can really step up his game if needed and look like a legit number 1. It's too bad he can't keep it up for longer than 5-6games. Auld was one of the few bright spots for Ottawa this past season. Expect him to steal a game or two. Good locker room guy too from my understanding.

You're gonna love him.

You never know, he was solid two years ago but I realize that this year Turco has been completely Jeckle and Hyde. It's a really good fit for you guys anyway because Auld basically bailed out the Senators and played for a stretch of games that lasted the whole month. Gerber was awful that entire time, but Auld managed to keep every game very close and didn't really let any softies in at all. He's a big guy and can stop almost any shot with positioning alone. He'll help you win games, you'll enjoy him.

Turco was solid for a couple of the months in the 07-08 regular season, yes...and obviously the playoff run. But he also had longggggggg long long stretches of completely sucking it up (aka the entire month of March and early April).

Am anxious to see what Auld has though. Have't been able to watch him a lot but the connection with Crawford probably makes him fit in a little more here.

He will get his chance here. Turco is going to have a stretch where he just isn't picking the puck up or moving fast enough. He's had a stretch like that every season of his NHL career so far.

love this move...he's started more than 60 games in a season for VAN, and even has some limited playoff experience....bailed out OTT this past year and only carries a $1mill cap hit....extreme value on paper if you ask me...good one joe!!

I think it's a legitimate question since the majority of this team is used to playing with a goalie that can (usually) competently move the puck.

Alex Auld is a decent net minder. We have ST next to the back up goalie in Boston...Alex is a nice kid and VERY big.

Ask him about his little guy (Sam) and you will get a big smile .

Best of luck Alex.

Great deal for you guys. Auld is underrated and is a very solid backup. Great size, moves pretty well in the crease and never gets rattled. For a few weeks he carried the Sens last year and played exceptionally well. I consider him a borderline to average starting goaltender.

You guys got a steal considering you only gave up a 6th rounder for him. Best of luck to Auldie the baldie!

Congrats Stars fans, you got a top 5 backup in the league. Auld played like a #1 this past season, then Elliott was brought in to get some experience and most of us forgot about his very good play. He has very good size and mobility and I wouldn't be at all suprised if he stole the job away from Turco, the only problem this guy has is puckmoving.

The only reason he didn't garner a 3rd round pick or something along those lines is because of the poor market for goalies

Very happy with this move, the cost makes it look almost like a free agent pickup!

Turco-Auld tandem in Dallas, is fine with me!

So the Stars flipped their 7th round pick this year for San Jose's 6th next year, then flip that for Auld... I think thats a pretty good return for a 7th round pick.

Auld was a great bacl-up for Ottawa. I would have preferred to hold on to him. That said, I hope he gets some starts in Dallas. He deserves it.
