I hope the organ-eye-zation does something for Modano at tonight's game. It would be virtually meaningless except to evoke some emotion out of the crowd (who may or may not understand what Modano has meant for the franchise), but I'd like to pay tribute to the guy with some applause.

Then again, I bet he comes back.

So should we be expecting a Benn-assigned-to-Cedar-Park announcement coming any day now?

Played all 82 games this year with no real signs of hitting the rookie wall. Got to think his long Memorial Cup run last year prepared him a little.

It'll also be interesting to see if he plays wing or displaces a center. Lindgren/Gagnon/Peters... who am I missing.

"Jamie Benn is traveling to the Texas Stars today and will join the team for its playoff run. He also is supposed to be in consideration for the World Championships in Germany May 7-21."

I couldn't imagine the AHL not allowing the TS to play next year but it seems that it will be resolved soon, assuming you can trust a single word that come out of these people's mouths.

concerning the fact the Texas Stars are operating on a one-year grace period with the AHL and still need to acquire an official franchise, I asked AHL President Dave Andrews in an e-mail about it and he said the process was ongoing and that he anticipated the process will be concluded in the near future.

Neither he nor the Texas Stars people would say where that franchise would come from or whether it would be an expansion franchise or not.

Jeez, that's something I never considered. This organizational unity between the NHL and AHL teams that was such a positive is going to get broken up since Cedar Park will remain with the Hicks family. Lame.

edit: oh, it's already being talked about in the other disaster thread. This thing can probably be un-stickied, right?

There have been people saying this in the AHL thread for a while now but it is nice to have some links to back it up. Appears the Stars will buy the Iowa franchise.
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/art...th-Polk-County
Quote:
Documents obtained from Polk County officials show the franchise would be sold for $3.75 million to the owners of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, which is operating a franchise in suburban Austin, Texas, on temporary status.

If approved by the county, the agreement would pave the way to end nearly a year of uncertainty over the immediate future of AHL hockey in Iowa’s largest city. AHL officials suspended the operation of the franchise after officials for Schlegel Sports acknowledged they intended to sell the franchise and move it from Des Moines after four years of operation.
...
County officials obtained an injunction last year prohibiting the movement of the franchise under an agreement that calls for a $12 million payment if the team was relocated.

Michael O’Meara, legal counsel to the county board, said Monday that he would recommend approval because “a protracted legal fight through bankruptcy would be costly and the outcome would be uncertain.”

Yea it's official!!

Quote:
Convening in Chicago today for its Spring Meeting, the American Hockey League Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the Iowa Chops inactive franchise to Hicks Cedar Park, LLC, owners of the Texas Stars.

The sale brings the Texas Stars to full membership in the AHL and satisfies the conditions of the limited membership granted to Hicks Cedar Park for the 2009-10 season.

The Texas Stars have enjoyed an outstanding inaugural season in the AHL, finishing second in the West Division with a record of 46-27-3-4 (99 points) and advancing the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs, where they are currently facing the Chicago Wolves. The Stars also ranked 10th in the 29-team AHL in regular-season attendance, averaging 5,335 fans per game at the Cedar Park Center in suburban Austin.

In operation since 1936, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 85 percent of today’s NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and this season marks the ninth consecutive year in which more than 6 million fans have attended AHL games across North America.

2 page article from the Statesman about the general state of the Austin market for hockey:

http://www.statesman.com/sports/pro/...he-673317.html

Some hard numbers in there too, including that there was a season ticket holder base of about 2000 this year, with 60% of those renewing so far for next fall. I'd have to think that number will continue to rise with each additional playoff win.

I'm stoked that they'll be staying. I'm in the process of moving down to Leander, which puts me about 5 miles or so away from Cedar Park. I fully expect to be at quite a few of the games down there next season.

Thank god I won't be losing my live hockey fix, lol.
