Good foot soldier but never lived up to the expectations coming out of HS. I think the trade with Boston worked out for both teams as they (he and Ward) are really No. 4 or 5 dmen. But I think the only reason why he became popular/overrated was because he was average while guys like Malik, Redden, Rosie and at times Tyutin were so GD awful.

I could really care less about Mara.

I liked Mara, but I have to agree that he was a bit of a disappointment overall. If he didn't have such a great attitude he wouldn't have been so popular here.

He's defense was alright, but it was really frustrating watching him try to play offense. This is a guy who reached 45 points, yet struggled to put up 20 playing here.

He shows meanness a couple of times a season but remains passive for awfully long stretches.

I think he is a wasted potential player.
Dear God, I agree with you again.

Have the seas turned blood red yet?

Mara's problem is that he can't put it all together consistently.

You can see why a team took him high in the draft. He's a big, strong kid who has the potential to play physical, put up some points and anchor a defense. But he rarely does all of those things at the same time and never does any of them consistently.

He's a good temporary option and is okay when he's on one year deals with no long term commitment. But overall, he's about an average player.

Canada is stealing all our players First Orr, then Sjo and now Mara. How about it Sens, want Redden back?

Mara is a hard-working guy and he was very solid for us. I'll never forget his blocking the shot when Lundqvist was out of the net in Game 6 against Buffalo. His signature play here. Class act and I wish him well with the Habs.

I think Torts liked Antropov, Sather(for whatever reason) did not like his asking price/years

Paul was disappointing because he could never live up to his full potential. But, at his salary he was a steal compared to some of the bloated contracts we had/have.

Bah lost a good leader on the blueline with this one. Sad to see the guy go but IMO one of the better pick ups so far this offseaoson for the Habs.

MARA don't do long term deals! LOL

Next time, Paul, never take a pay cut. You gained nothing and just got less money.

Thank you for what you've done here by being a solid D, good teacher for Staal and exemplary professional. Good luck in new team.
I will root for you when MTL play someone else.

Seems like he loved being a Ranger. Character guy in the dressing room, well liked and respected. He was not the problem, but was not the answer either.

I agree with the previous posters that his offense was lacking, couldn't move the puck that well, and his skating was just average.

That said, he took the body well, was good on the PK and stood up for his teammates.

There were a couple of times in the Washington series he made some bad decisions that cost us. That, and the fact that the cupboard is loaded with talent at D punched his ticket out of town.

Good luck Paul. You wore the sweater proudly, and we appreciate you for it.

Count me in as another one who liked Mara but we just didn't have any space for him on the roster. With the 4 we have in Redden, Rozsival, Girardi and Staal plus probably Gilroy, there just wasn't any room since we should let one of Potter, Sauer, Sanguinetti etc battle it out for the last spot.

Good luck to Paul, hope he does well in Montreal.

Disapointing.....but Expected. I really Liked Mara, I think if Torts isn't the coach he is still here, He took yet another pay cut to, in a couple of more years he will be playing for free.

As of last year, yes. Ever since the Kaleta incident at the end of the 07-08 season. He went after him the next season:

Not quite. You can have the 3rd pairing d-man. We'll take the top prospect.

No way - a decent #5 or 6 - I don't think he's better than Bouillon. Hope they don't pair him with Gill - if they do put a sign SLOW VEHICULES AHEAD. However , Mara great attitude.

C'mon, guys - there's a reason he only got 1 year and $1.675MM. Good team guy, but league consensus seems to be he's no more than an average 3rd pairind Dman now.

everyone keeps saying Mara and hometown discount last year. maybe it actually had something to do with what he was worth? based on his play and what he signed for this season i think it's the latter.
