Making a Top 50 list (Best alternative rock songs of the 90's)

I am interested in making various polls, counting to 50 to list the best alternative rock songs of the 1990's.

This is where you guys come in.

Please help me choose which songs I should feature in the first poll, two of which will win the titles of "1st and 2nd" and I'll select two songs every poll to be added to the list of the best alternative rock songs, on HFBoards.

I'll throw out a few ideas, but any input is greatly appreciated.

Thom

Possible options for poll #1:

Bands:
Stone Temple Pilots
Radiohead
Smashing Pumpkins
Soundgarden
Alice In Chains
Nirvana
RCHP
Weezer

Songs:
"Creep" by Radiohead
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana
"1979" by the Smashing Pumpkins
"Everlong" by the Foo Fighters
"Californication" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers

I will select any 10 songs you guys recommend, this is just a fun way to pass the summer, so let's enjoy it.

I'll post the poll hopefully when I get home from work today.

Agreed such a fantastic era of music, I expect great difficulty in choosing which songs to add.

REM - Losing My Religion
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Pearl Jam - Black
Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
Beck - Loser
The Wallflowers - One Headlight
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Oasis - Wonderwall
Alice in Chains - No Excuses
Radiohead - Creep
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication, Under the Bridge
Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot
Candlebox - Far Behind
Nirvana - Lithium
Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman
Collective Soul - Shine, December
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
The Cranberries - Linger
Feeder - High
Bush - Machinehead, Glycerine, Swallowed, Comedown
Tool - Stinkfist, Parabola

Pick 10 out of these songs, and they'll be the first ten.

Way too low. Should be top 10.

Was released in 1988.

Quickly looking through my music collection, here are some of my favorite 90's songs in no real order.
Teenage Fanclub-The Concept
Ride- Vapour Trail
The La's- There She Goes
Pavement- Gold Soundz, Summer Babe, Range Life, Silence Kid, Stereo, Shady Lane
Oasis- Live Forever, Don't Look Back in Anger, Acquiesce, Wonderwall
Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium, Heart Shaped Box
Toadies- Possum Kingdom
The Verve- Bittersweet Symphony, Lucky Man, Rolling People, Blue, Butterfly, History, New Decade.
Guided By Voices- I am a Scientist
Jane's Addiction- Jane Says (very likely #1)
The Breeders- Cannonball (duh)
Pearl Jam- Jeremy, Yellow Ledbetter
Pixies- U-MASS, Is She Weird?, Velouria
The Stone Roses- Love Spreads, Fool's Gold

Edit: forgot about Weezer. Buddy Holly, Sweater Song, My Name Is Jonas, The World has Turned and Left Me Here, Say it Ain't So, In the Garage, El Scorcho, Pink Triangle, The Good Life. Essentially all of the first two albums.

I would omit Pixies, too - never liked them

Was Jane Says a 90s song? I'm thinking '88 or '89 for some reason. Oh, well.

I didnt choose the Chili Peppers because they dont immediately come to mind when I think "alternative"

Jane Says is on Nothing Shocking which came out in 88. Also someone has Tool-Parabola on their list which is on Lateralus and came out in 2001.

This list has to include some of the great alternative rock one hit wonders from the 90's

Marcy Playground-Sex and Candy and Better then Ezra-Good are a few off the top of my head.

Get your ears checked. Although their 90s albums are much worse than their 80s stuff. I could accept them being left off this list.

Yeah, I was thinking like '93 for Jane Says, since it used to always play on Sirius's 90s alternative channel. Obviously need to remove that from my list.

There are just too many--it'll be really hard to get people to agree on a list.

I'll just thrown in a group that hasn't been mentioned yet--no love for Matchbox 20?

I don't think very many around here would consider them to be alternative.

So instead of one big mega-list I'll throw my songs out in bunches. Sorry for any repeats - I know I've seen a lot of good mentions already.

I'll go act by act, starting with Bjork, for the hell of it.

Bjork: Human Behaviour, Violently Happy, There's More To Life Than This, Army of Me, Hyper-Ballad

Urge Overkill: Sister Havana, Positive Bleeding, Dropout, Bottle of Fur, Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon

The Verve Pipe: The Freshmen, Cup Of Tea, Photograph, Ominous Man

Soul Asylum: Black Gold, Somebody To Shove, Runaway Train, Homesick, Without A Trace, Misery, To My Own Devices, Promises Broken, Eyes Of A Child, Just Like Anyone, Tell Me When, Nothing To Write Home About, I Will Still Be Laughing, Cradle Chain

Grant Lee Buffalo: Fuzzy, Dixie Drug Store, Lone Star Song, Jupiter & Teardrop, Mockingbirds, It's The Life, Mighty Joe Moon, Sing Along, Lady Godiva and Me, Demon Called Deception, Honey Don't Think, Rock of Ages, Arousing Thunder, Even The Oxen, Better For Us, Testimony, Truly Truly, Everybody Needs A Little Sanctuary

Jesus Jones: Who? Where? Why?; International Bright Young Thing; Right Here, Right Now; Real,Real,Real; Welcome Back, Victoria; Are You Satisfied?; Blissed; Zeroes and Ones; The Devil You Know; The Right Decision; Idiot Stare; Maryland; For A Moment; February; Together

Catherine Wheel: Black Metallic, Salt, Balloon, Crank, Broken Head, Pain, Strange Fruit, The Nude, Show Me Mary, God Inside My Head, Waydown, Heal, Eat My Dust You Insensitive ****, Judy Staring At The Sun, Wish You Were Here, Delicious, Phantom Of the American Mother, Here Comes The Fat Controller

R.E.M. Losing My Religion, Belong, Texarkana, Low, Half A World Away, Me In Honey, Drive, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, Everybody Hurts, Man On the Moon, Nightswimming, What's The Frequency,Kenneth?, Crush With Eyeliner, Star69, Strange Currencies, Bang and Blame

Blur: Chemical World, For Tomorrow, Girls & Boys, End Of A Century, Country House, Best Days, The Universal, Entertain Me, Yuko & Hiro, On Your Own, Strange News From Another Star, Coffee & TV

That's it for this burst - more tomorrow.

As stated in the "one hit wonders" threads that have popped up over the years, Better Than Ezra was not a one hit wonder, unless you're talking strictly the top 40 pop charts. They had hits with Good, Rosealia, Desperately Wanting, and King Of New Orleans.
