Indoor Game at the Big O vs the Capitals (Nov. 28)

Quote:
The Montreal Canadiens’ regular-season game at Olympic Stadium is expected to be on the agenda when the 2009-10 NHL schedule is released tomorrow.

The final tinkering to the 92nd NHL regular season will be made in the next 24 hours, but a league source indicated yesterday that a Habs home game against the Washington Capitals and star sniper Alex Ovechkin “is still in the mix for late November.”

The indoor game at Olympic Stadium is expected to be contested on Nov. 28 or the previous Saturday to help commemorate the Canadiens’ centennial celebrations that will conclude on Dec. 5 with a match against the rival Boston Bruins at the Bell Centre.

The Olympic Stadium game was an idea brought forth, discussed and met with approval at the competition committee meeting three weeks ago – providing the NHL schedule makers could accommodate the request.

Washington? How boring.

I'd rather Boston, Toronto, or even Ottawa...

Well, this brings down the atmosphere at the stadium down a notch.

I think the league will try to suck some fame from the Habs to sell Ovechkin.

Sounds cool. Only problem is that place is a hole. If they decide to take off the toilet seat perhaps it'll be more fun.

It was never going to be Boston because they're hosting the winter classic. Toronto would have been an all Canadian matchup. Nothing to sell down south.

Plus, probably the most important point, the NHL REALLY wanted Ovechkin in the winter classic but NBC shot it down in favor of Philly so this is a make up.

Boring, but the NHL doesn't give out football sized games to anyone. It's a huge game and a home run for the NHL. NHL's biggest star playing the NHL's greatest team, hopefully a competitive one next year. Counting on big ratings, publicity in the States. Habs don't have the say against who they want to play.

They fit 58k for the cfl there didn't they? I wonder if we could see 60k + there due to the smaller size of the ice rink leaving more space for temporary stands.

Anyone know whats the most ever attended nhl game?

I think the most attendance hockey game was a US collegial game, in excess of 100,000 IIRC..

The Grey Cup attracks like 67k, i'd expect a crowd of over 70k for the Habs. 80k is possible.

I think the steating at the Big O is something like 50k... I doubt we would see 70k. Wouldn't fit.

Wiki says it's 66k with the football configuration. Then maybe.

Man, the Caps? I was really hoping we'd play Boston or Toronto.

The Big O was a terrible place to watch baseball games and it'll be 10 times worse for a hockey game. Not to say I wouldn't go but I wouldn't be too sorry to watch it in HD either.
