HFBoards TOP 60 ranking: Defencemen #30

Now that the season and playoffs are over, I thought we'd do an "HFboards ranking" for each position.

So basically, who (of the following) is the best defenceman in the NHL? ie. which Dman would you want on your team for next year only? (independent of their respective salary)

Vote away.

Ranking so far

1. Lidstrom
2. Chara
3. Pronger
4. Niedermayer
5. Weber
6. Markov
7. Gonchar
8. Keith
9. Bouwmeester
10. Green

11. Boyle
12. Timonen
13. Phaneuf
14. Zubov
15. Kaberle
16. Martin
17. Streit
18. Rafalski
19. Regehr
20. Suter

21. Seabrook
22. Wideman
23. Kronwall
24. Burns
25. Souray
26. Visnovsky
27. Campbell
28. Vlasic
29. Pitkanen

Now it gets a lot tougher to pick one.

I'm thinking the two Vancouver guys have to go soon - Bieksa for his all-round game, Mitchell for still being one of the best shutdown guys in the game (honestly, i don't think Regehr is that far ahead of him). Mitchell > Komisarek and Staal, that's for sure.

Consider this a bump. Yes, I'm so hungover today, I can't do any work, so might as well bump someone else's polls.

Anyway, I voted Mitchell. The gap between him and Regehr really shouldn't be that huge.

Add Jan Hejda.
Tied for 7th in the league at +21 last year, while playing over 22 minutes a game. Second place on Columbus was +12. And it isn't a fluke. In 2007-08, he was +20 while second on the team was +7.

Columbus had two great seasons in a row by young goaltenders, and at least some of that has to be credited to the personel they have at D.

Only thing you have to realise is that Hitchock's system makes it easy to be a + player, much like Julien. Although the gap between him and the next guy is pretty big, Ill give him that.

Ballard: +12 with the Panthers, and 34 points.

He's way underrated.

Johnson.

Ballard and Komisarek are also good choices.

Interesting to see Vlasic in the top 30.... Also, add Liles.

For next year only, it has to be Willie Mitchell.

EJ was injured all of last year and Staal had a pretty terrible year as well.

I don't understand how people can vote Erik Johnson above many of those players.

Sure he's going to be great, and he's pretty good right now, but to call him 30th best in the league over most of those guys is just ludicrous.

You should add Tobias Enstrom from Atlanta on there. He had 32 points this year and was a +14 on for the most part, a bad Thrashers team. He also had 38 points as a rookie last year.

Only on HF would a player that might be good have more value than a player who already is good

We are getting into the overpaid and over-the-hill defensemen ranks now.

I know he's not a sexy name, but Cory Sarich deserves to be in the 30-45 range easily.

Solid, dependable D who's efforts in the offensive zone drastically improved this year. I'd almost call him a two way guy now.
