Love the pickup. Low risk move and he can provide some offence from the bottom lines. Also very familiar with the coaching staff as he played for Sutter in the WJ's and McGill in Kootenay. I can see him and Boyd platooning on the second line depending on who is hot.

While Dawes is only 5'8", he is a brick-s#!thouse. He is probably one of the top 20 strongest players in the NHL. His workouts are incredible, and his maxes are unbelievable for a short guy. My brother's roomate used to work out with him in NY. He is a good skater, and has good hands, and will score the occasional OMG goal. He is not really physical, but does not shy away from contact, and I have seen numerous bigger players bounce off of him during checks. Somewhat suspect defensively, and very inconsistent, although he played musical chairs under Renney so that is reasonable. I like the guy, and if given ice-time consistently, and finding linemates that work, he will be a 15-20 goal 45 pt. guy for a while,IMO.

He isn't technically unsigned. Dawes elected for arbitration and the 'Yotes would have been obligated to accept the arbitration award contract (or exercise their walk away rights if the award were greater than $1.57M). By waiving him they would escape that obligation (if he were claimed). By claiming him, the Flames accept that arbitration obligation.

Dawes is a stocky guy who's stronger than he looks, but lets not get carried away. He's still like 185 maybe 190 lbs. To say he's ine of the 20 strongest players in the entire league is a stretch.

Short guys don't have to push the weights as far.

Dawes would routinely rip phonebooks in half with his bare hands.

I'm 5'7" and 140 lbs and I can do that. There's a trick to it. I think it's called 'fanning the pages'. I learned it years ago. I've shocked many people by doing it.

But yeah, still an awesome pick-up for nothing, IMHO. Now then....does anybody want Boyd for a 2nd? Please.....

I was able to dig up an old photo of Dawes while he was with the Rangers. That is a hockey stick he is holding.

He must have the same disease that Micheal Jackson had.

i think dawes is really like 7'2 and pulls mack trucks with his balls.

he has potential that is for sure, just need to actualize it.

It's a shame Pronger left the west.

I'd take a chance on Dawes. One of the more gifted of the old New York nameless crew.

I could tell from those first few months in 2006 though, that Blair Betts was going to become one hell of a player.

Accounting for his stature, perspectively, I would say he is easily in the top 20... 400 lb benches don't neccessarily translate to hockey success, but he is a little monster, for sure.

Not sure about his bench lbs but I was told he leg presses 800lbs on workouts. No wonder he's hard to knock over for a little guy.

For how many? I can rep a set of ten at near that weight. I would be surprised if a lot of NHLers weren't able to do close to that for at least ten reps.

Heard on the radio, Phoenix put him on waivers expecting him to clear as a negotiating or arbitration tactic (ie: "hey, he cleared waivers, nobody wants him, we shouldn't have to pay him that much"). Guess it backfired.
