I agree. Every round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is best of seven. A team has to win four rounds to be the champions.

Colorado in 1996-97 was the last team to go through the first two rounds in 6 or more games and go on to win the Cup. (They did sweep Florida once there.)

Not really. Do the math over the course of 50 years. The better the seeding, the more statistically likely a team is to succeed. Your statistical sample is way too small to be relevant and it pertains only to the Devils. Ironically, during that exact same stretch of time to which you're referring the President's Trophy-winning Stars, Wings, and Avs all won the Stanley Cup after getting the 1st seed

Um because the top seeded teams usually got there by being the best team?

Give the top three teams (i.e., division winners) five home games in the first round. So it would play out like this, were the season to end today:

TB v. NYI - 5 home games for TB
Boston v. Montreal - 5 for Boston
Toronto v. Ottawa - 5 for Philly

Games 1-3 at home
Games 4-5 on road
Games 6-7 at home
I like the idea, but like this layout better:

Games 1-2 at home
Game 3 on the road
Games 4-5 at home
Game 6 on the road
Game 7 at home
