Patrick Marleau - I like this guy but he's on a choker team and its debatable if hes a #1 center. A change in scenery could benefit him and the Rangers though.
Lecavalier - forget it...unless Sather knows something we dont know about the rules and the cap in the near furture
Jokienen - He's worth a look for sure....but whats the price.
Savard - Oh man do I wish he was a Ranger...guy is absolute $$$ as a playmaker but hes a UFA and is coming into his PAYDAY. I also just don't see Boston trading a key piece to their contention for the cup next year.
Patrick Sharp - Not really a 1st line C and more of a goal scorer than a playmaker. Love his game to be honest. Would be great to have but probably not the right fit for 1st line C
Heres a short list written on the Rangers boards of possible Centers but some are more realistic than others.

I would absolutely love to have Savard but I don't think Boston would part with him unless we over-payed like crazy (And I don't blame them)

The Rangers need a Fast, Playmaking Center who can hold onto the puck in the offensive zone long enough for Gaborik to find an open space. Obviously that is pretty specific skill set.
They need..
-Good Skating ability with a high top-speed
-Good vision to dish the puck in tight quarters
-Good passing ability to make that pass
-Stick-handling skills to hold onto the puck while Gaborik gets open.

Obviously, this would be the Rangers perfect molded player for our first line but we will take what we can get!

After a long evaluation, I have come to the conclusion that the person best suited to fit this role is Wade Belak.

Belak is good for 30 goals, 40 assists, and 100 points a year.

Alright but you guys are gonna have to part with some prospects and salary to afford any of these players....zherdev, roszival, mcdonaugh, del zotto, sanguinetti, ansimov, grachev, 1st 10 are the group of pieces that probably 3 or 4 will be picked out of those and used in a trade

oh.. i didnt see your part about a playmaking center. jokinen doesnt have the best vision and isnt as creative as other top playmaking centers but he is an absolute work horse... well atleast he was this past year.

you know how many teams need a playmaking first line center? everyone. you know who is going to trade thier first line playmaking center away to a team with no really valuable assests? nobody. you know how many first line centers or even second line centers are UFA? maybe a handful. you know how many of them you can afford thanks to Sathers failure to understand the basics of team management? none....

good luck Rags.

It's true. His goals are so good they count twice.

why is savard even in discussions about being traded? hes an elite player on a team close to making a cup run and is only at 5m a year.

The Rangers HAD the exact type of player the OP is describing in Scott Gomez...but they failed to surround him with the type of talent to maximise his effectiveness.

People want to knock Gainey for making this trade with the Rangers, but the Habs had a need at center and whether or not people think Gomez is worth his contract, he does fill that need for the Habs.

When Gomez was still a Ranger, their greatest need was scoring wingers...well they've now acquired 2 scoring wingers in Chris Higgins & Marian Gaborik, but they've created another hole (playmaking center) in doing so.

And people said the Habs acquiring Gomez was a lateral move...if anyone made a lateral move, it was the Rangers

Nothing that intriguing on the market. So the answer is:

Brandon Dubinsky.

If Dubinsky can't cut it during the beginning of the season, you give Anisimov/Drury a chance to play with Gaborik. If Anisimov/Drury can't cut it, then you look elsewhere for a deadline acquisition (if the Rangers are competing) or go into next offseason with a center as your main target.
