Chris Chelios wants to be a Ranger

According to Jeremy Roenick, Chris Chelios wants to be a Ranger:

"Chelly wants to play until he's 50," Roenick said. "Chelly wants to play in New York, for the Rangers
and Glen Sather. And I'll tell you this: No person had a bigger effect on my career."

I don't think Slats takes a run at him. What would he do? Tell stories in the press box?

said it once, i'll say it again. IF we were to sign a vet, it would be as a 7th position and at league minimum. Our prospects have to be locked in for the 5 and 6 positions. If we really need a vet defenseman though, why not someone like Luke Richardson or Teppo Numminen? Zubov or Schneider if we can afford them.

Rosival, Redden, Staal, Girardi, Gilroy, Sauer/MDZ (according to Graves), a vet at league minimum?

Gilroy's no lock, especially considering he's got a 1.7 cap hit. If it comes down to us being tight with the cap, Sather may opt to keep Gilroy in Hartford for a year and platoon the other guys... it's not like we don't have the depth there. Gilroy/Heikken/MDZ/Sanguinetti/Sauer/Potter.. two of these guys will be the fifth and sixth.

It'd be nice to get a Luke Richardson, Numminen, Schneider, etc. but you have to realize these guys are only gonna sign in their "perfect" situation. I'm sure a lot of them aren't excited at the idea of playing under Torts. We often forget it takes two to make a contract work, and that teams can't just sign whoever they want even if the money is right.

If he was to come in as the 7th d-man and kind of take over Struds old role I would be happy with that. Even if he only plays 25 games I would love ot have his leadership and experience with all of the younger guys around like Staal, Girardi, MDZ, Sangs, Gilroy, etc.

He wouldn't be a bad 7th dman at all. Don't just look at his age and offensive statistics and scream no way.

If he played for like 800k I would take him as a 7th defenseman. He wouldn't play much, but he would bring the leadership and experience in defence we need. Then we could fill the two remaining spots on defense with rookies (Gilroy/Sangs/MDZ...).

Chris played around with signing with us a few years ago--not having any real intention to do so. I'm sorry but he's just trying to prolong a career that's over. No ****ing way.

Didnt Sather try to sign him 8 or 9 years ago and he used the Rangers to get the contract he wanted from Detroit?

Chris Chelios knows more about hockey than the entire rest of our coaching staff combined. I would sign him for league minimum, then "assign" him to Hartford so his money didn't count against the cap, and bring him up when we need him to play I doubt anyone tries to claim him. For all the talk about "veteran leadership" around here, you think some people would recognize it when they see it. I don't see how the guy wouldn't be a solid additon to this team, mostly off the ice, but sometimes on it. There isnt a trick in the book the guy doesn't know about, he's played in big games, and he's a great example of how to keep yourself in prime shape, he's pushing 50 for crying out loud and it's not a stretch to say he could play next year. I'd do it, keep him around in case of injury or back to back games when someone gets dinged up on a road trip. I think with all the young Dmen we have around here, he could be a great help to their development, as long as he's not getting much icetime.

Put Jeremy on the list too, then. He would love to play in New York. Maybe "Knuckles" Nilan too. I hear he has been working on his hand speed recently!

Chris Chelios is the perfect mentor to the deepest group of young d-men in the league. For that reason alone I'd sign him to the league minimum as a #7 d-man. He would be invaluable grooming all these kids and if someone gets hurt and he needs to fill in for 10-15 mins/night when he isn't sore or banged up, he'd be fine. The guy doesn't have to cross center ice. He's smart enough to pick up his guy in front of the net and to get the puck out of the zone which is all you want out of your #3 pair. We need cap help so I think its great on that end as well.
