Frustrated. Can't believe that with this lineup we didn't finish dead last and pick Kovalchuck....

In a decade, Leafs fans are going to say the same thing about their lineup of last season and Tavares.

like the defense, hate the offense. That was right around the time I got NHL center ice, talk about painful, I was so excited to finally get every Hab game only to have to watch such a bad team every night.

That was around the time I got Center Ice as well.

What an awful, awful lineup. The defense is decent though.

I take our 4th line right now before any of these.

... And probably Hamilton's 1st, too.

Markov, Koivu, Souray. The only good things there.

Essentially 3 4th lines and 1 2nd line with questionable Defending Lines.

Any team with Markov as its 6th d-man must be an elite all-star team.

People who bash Gainey need to look at these types of threads and remember what that team was like for almost a decade leading up to 2003...

Well, but from that lineup, how difficult would it have been for any decent NHL GM to come in and improve the team? The 2001 lineup in January doesn't change mistakes that were made by the current regime, does it?

I'm not talking about this past June 30-July 1, because we will only know if those two days were well done by Gainey or not at a future date, but it's hard not to admit that several mistakes in asset management were made since he came aboard.

Gainey may not deserve the piling on that comes from the other 29 fan bases, which is more to do with the Habs' past success and their current struggles in my opinion, but I think in general he gets far too much of a free pass within the Habs' fandom. He has strengths as a GM, there's no question about it, but it seems to me that his flaws have become extremely visible over time.

I'm sure I'll get killed on this board for this opinion, but whatever.

I still can't believe Chad Kilger was our 2nd center.

Comparing this with what we had in recent years is probably why I still can't hate on Gainey

What a sad team, we definately should have gone into the draft with a top 3 pick. I seem to remember the Habs finishing the season on a bit of a tear.
