Blues looking for D-man

http://mapleleafshotstove.com/index....ers/#more-5143

Quote:
Andy Strickland reports that the St. Louis Blues are looking to shore up their defense with a depth acquisition, likely a top 4 defenseman if the price is right, or more likely a reliable bottom pairing defender. Toronto could potentially entice them with Mike Van Ryn or Jonas Frogren in exchange for a draft pick, but it’s believed that the Blues would prefer to ship out Cam Janssen or D.J. King as part of any package.

I didn't want to start a separate thread on this, but I couldn't find where "Speculations" should go, so if there is, move it there for me please.

Mike van ryn for some foward by the name of Steen?

I'm not too familiar with the blues roster so I'm not sure what we could want from them.

Their D is not very deep, TJ Oshie would be nice, but fat chance it would happen.

They treat Oshie like a messiah.

I dont see him like that at all. Likely a very good second line C for any team, but the way they treat Oshie and some of their prospects, it makes us Leafs fans look better with the way we, as per others, overrate our prospects and players.

I'd be fine taking D.J King back with a pick for either one.

Oshie would be an amazing player to obtain. Maybe kaberle could be traded there? They have what it takes to make it to the playoffs, but couldn't do much there.

A puck moving defencemen could be the difference in winning a game in the playoffs haha.

Bold as it is, I don't think there is a fanbase in the entire NHL that covet and overrate their prospects as much as St Louis fans do. Trade proposals are like pulling teeth with them.

Brewer might not even play this year.

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/spo...6?OpenDocument

Quote:
The Blues, at least publicly, aren't acknowledging the need for more experience on the blue line. Jackman has played 391 NHL games, followed by Weaver's 262 and Colaiacovo's 174. But after those three, the next six defensemen on the team's depth chart have played a combined 248 games in the NHL.

"As of right now, we are who we are," Davidson said. "If we find a deal that makes sense, we'd go look at it, whether that's a signing or whether it's a trade. But I can't go spend $3 or $4 million just because I don't know if a player is going to be back or not. I don't want to run out and sign an expensive player and find out that Eric can play. That doesn't make any sense."

I am just curious - Blues have all these guys at center:

McDonald, Oshie, Backes, McClement, Berglund, Paddock, Boyes..

Where do they fit them all?

Another "Speculation" from Maple Leaf Hot Stove

Quote:
Deal #1:
Toronto trades Jason Blake to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a 3rd round pick. (I would have laughed if it was Blake and Stempniak for Carlo and Steen).
But the piece goes into Leafs going after Vinnie, so I find it hard to trust it.

Why trade Kabs? He's the only elite PMD we have and playoff contender teams NEED one of these to have success. If we trade him, that leaves a huge hole in our D for a guy who can move the puck. No point of making a trade just for the sake of making a trade.

I'm a big Oshie fan and I don't think of him as a 1st liner, I don't know if he will ever put up big points. He has the skill to put up a lot of points, but he's an effective player even if he doesn't. He basically plays on the 3rd line in STL anyway. Oshie's status in St. Louis is somewhere between Luke's in Toronto and Lucic's in Boston.

I think STL fans just get really protective of their young guys, but I don't know why that's surprising. Everyone here wants the Leafs to build up draft picks and draft and develop good young players, STL did that and now everyone wants them to trade them away. They'd just rather suffer through the growing pains and emerge with a solid young core than trade them for vets. I would have thought Leafs fans of all fanbases would understand that.

Paddock doesn't play in the NHL. You're actually forgetting Steen and Tkachuk too. Oshie and Boyes tend to play wing. McD and Backes play on the same line, one of them plays wing. Berglund is the only one there who regularly plays centre. Their third line is probably going to be something like Eller-Tkachuk-Oshie or Steen-Tkachuk-Oshie, all 4 of those guys can play centre if needed. Tons of centres, but playing them on the wing doesn't hurt too much.

As for the original topic, the Blues are pretty young and weak at D if Brewer can't make camp, and it's not looking too good right now.

Johnson - Jackman
Polak - Cola
Pietrangelo - Weaver
Strachan/Junland/Wagner

Keep in mind the Blues have about $4m cap space left, aren't spending to the cap, and would rather give Weaver/call-up regular minutes than trade away their future.

Problem is - they don't really have bad contracts you could take off.

They have some young D coming up, so I don't think they would go for a long term signed D.. which leaves MVP who is a huge question mark, White and XLB.

Theres a chance that Brewer will be shut down for the season. In that case they will get another 4 mil in cap relief.
