Great deal for Wellwood. The guy has the potential to pot 20 goals easily and is our best shootout option.

I'm happy with that deal for Wellwood; hopefully he can build on the solid playoffs he had.

so was it an arbitration award, or did the Canucks sign him beforehand?

It would be nice if the Sun would add a byline, so we'd know which reporter was behind this.

It says it right in the article. Like the 2nd line.

$3.7M with 13 forwards, Rome as our 6th defenceman, but no 7th and Raycroft as backup.

So if Hansen re-signs for $.6M we can still afford a $2.5M defenceman.

I think it's about $3.5mm left if Raycroft is the b/u, Rome is the 7th d-man, Nicholat is not on the active roster....and that's a 21 man roster.

Estimation, although I did hear that figure from a couple of other people. $1.25 is even better, though.

$3,210,000 ... that doesn't include bonuses ($940K)

according to:

http://www.capgeek.com/cap_calculator.php

that's for 13 forwards signed, 7 dmen, and 2 goalies (Raycroft as backup and Schneider in the minors)... still need to add another dman though, as that 7 includes Rome and Nycholat.

Capgeek has the roster at 21 players and $4.4m of cap space, but they haven't updated with Wellwood yet, so it's $3.2 million with 22 players.
http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=29

The team should still have about $2.5m to sign a defenseman.

Updated link says it was the contract awarded by the arbitrator.

The update is by Brad Zeimer.

We've now got 11 capable top 9 forwards (12 if Hansen gets signed)...

Sedin, Sedin, Samuelsson, Burrows, Kesler, Demitra, Raymond, Grabner, Hodgson, Wellwood, Bernier, Hansen

You have to figure there's a trade coming at some point. If Sundin signs it'd be beautiful if we could somehow unload Demitra and his $4 million. To me this is the ideal starting night roster:

Sedins - Burrows
Kesler - Sundin - Samuelsson/Raymond
Raymond/Samuelsson - Hodgson/Wellwood - Bernier
Rypien - Johnson - Hordichuk/Raymond

Edler - Salo
Mitchell - Schneider
Bieksa - O'Brien
Rome

Luongo
Raycrap

Excellent signing for the Canucks. Wellwood deserves the money and he'll help the team. Good stuff.

Oh yeah, you can add Shirokov to the possible top 9 forward logjam if we get him over here.

Christ we've come a long way from the Byron Ritchie top 6 days.

I think this move should pave the way for Gillis next move on D now that the uncertainty of wellwoods deal is over.

1.2 for the year is a fair deal, 5,000 dollars less than I guessed he would have signed for.
I dont know how we can fit Hansen, a dman, and potentially Sundin though....

Which makes me sad. I don't hate Demitra, but that $4 million could be used wayyyyyyyyyyyy better somewhere else. I'd even dump him for a 3rd rounder at this point just for the cap space it would clear up. I hear Phoenix is looking to take on salary .
