He was Lecavalier's winger.

FTR his buyout hit is $1.167M per over 6 years. That's a cap savings of $2.33M per for the next years, and a $1.167M hit in years 4-6 (2012-2014 seasons). Something big is coming in 24-48 hours.

If the Penguins can make it to the finals 2 years ago with Sykora on Malkin's wing then Prospal's defense can't be bad enough to hurt the Pens. If Prospal and McKee think a like then I would take him in a second.

A couple of years ago when somebody asked Torts who the worst skater on the team was, he said something about Prospal skates like he has a Maytag strapped to his back.

It is only players who have an NMC (and as far as I know, Prospal does not have one) who have the option of accepting or rejecting waivers - all other players must clear waivers before the buyout can proceed.
In another forum someone said he checked and that he does, indeed, have an NMC and had to give permission to be placed on waivers. He chose instead to accept the buyout.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that. Guess there is some cause for concern then. They were one of the worst team in the league so I still I think would take him. He would be playing with 2 defensively responsible players and of course Malkin wouldn't hurt his offensive production. If he wants to sign the same deal Mckee did then I wouldn't mind at all.

Or a baby grand...

That said, Torts also pointed out that as bad a skater as he appeared to be, he always got to where he needed to be. Lecavalier always seemed more productive - and happier - with Prospal on his wing. This could be interesting from a chemistry standpoint.

If he's smart he'd take a slight discount and bring his heart to Lord Stanley's town.

I really don't like this move. There had to be another way to slice a couple million off the payroll without eating more than a million dollars per year for the next SIX years. Bad management of a contract; Prospal is a solid player and I expect him to come around this year. Tampa just likes to make moves for the sake of making moves, though they have made some quality moves this offseason.

Toronto?

With 3 kids including one born in June I wouldn't be too shocked if he hung them up and spend his winters in Tampa and summers in Czech Republic.

I could also see him signing with a Czech team too.

I agree that the buyout makes no sense right now, unless we have something huge brewing. I don't think Prospal is ready to retire right now but it is possible...

If we trade for Heatley, I'm hiring a gypsy to put a death hex on Brian Lawton and OK. I'm seriously thinking Tanguay, 2 yrs, 8m or some such.

Not too sure about that source, but the St. Pete Times and Tampa Tribune had both reported those same numbers for the buyout.

6 years at 1.167 Mil

pretty stupid .............they have tons of cap space could they not of just let him play and see what came out of it. They could of just done it next year if he blew

is tanguay at 4-4.5MM really better than Prospal at $3.5? factor in the hit from the buyout and tanguay is in effect costing you closer to $6MM a year. At the same time, this doesnt address the fact that tbay has about 3 defenseman too many. A trade of a couple of cheap young Dmen (smaby/lashoff/lundin) for a medium priced forward (kobasew?) would make sense to me, but I feel like that's not what TB is going for. Tanguay here we come....

Actually, that had nothing to do with it. Those comments were because Prospal was upset over not only being taken off Lecavalier's line to put someone else on it who was struggling, but then losing significant ice time because his linemates were stinking up the joint & being benched for lack of effort. Guess he was upset to wind up riding the pine through no fault of his own.

He and Torts actually got along quite well. Prospal was reportedly one of very few Tampa players who called Torts when he got fired.

Prospal's my favorite player, but even I'm willing to see what we do to replace him before deciding it's a stupid move.

Like many i'm a little shocked that he was bought out and couldn't be moved to another team.

The term of his contract might have scared off some teams, but it's not like he was making a hefty salary for a top six player.

In fairness to Prospal, Lecavalier had a pretty poor year (by his standards, that is) due to the shoulder injury that he played with for much of the year.

Anyways, if Prospal is willing to sign for somewhere around $1.5M or so on a one-year deal (doubtful, but maybe possible with the massive buy-out he is receiving), I'd like to see Carolina pick him up to play on a line with Staal and Cole. Prospal's lack of speed likely wouldn't be an issue while being paired with two excellent skaters.
