you know how it is with the NHL - it's always the flavour of the week - and Bert just isn't it.

it's like that with players and teams... two years ago everyone had the Sharks as a Cup contender... a year later they're almost guarenteed to miss the playoffs... next year watch them be one of the favs again....

right now the hype is around the lightning alot, so it's not surprising to see people picking st. louis and lecavalier...

I'm for the lottery because of what it does, but usually the team finishing last will have deserved that distinction. The Penguins have this year.
true enough... they have *earned* it... but being the worst team in the nhl I think shouldn't get you any sure bets... earning a top lottery pick (picking no lower than 2nd) is reward enough for having the worst season in the league this year.

I like Lecavalier/St.Louis over Bertuzzi/Naslund in large part because of their younger age (especially LeCavalier only being 23). I think LeCavalier/St.Louis have more room for improvement over this season than Bertuzzi/Naslund because of that factor.

while age means something down the road, looking at next season I don't think it would mean much... it's not like Nazzy and Bert are old men... they're right in the middle of the primes of their careers.

I agree that Lecavalier is a good pick to break out, but at 23 few players hit their prime and it's likely to be another 2-3 years before Lecavalier is truly at the top of his game.

definitely hard if not impossible to predict the best tandems next season... I just think that given both their past productions, their chemistry together and the mountain of motivation that both of them will have for next season, they'll certainly be a tandem to watch... I'd be surprised actually if Bertuzzi doesn't come back full of motivation to have his best season ever, given that both he and Naslund know it could be their last seasons together.

Being young is usually a detriment in this regard, Taxman. Over NHL history, it's usually players in their prime who do better than players in their youth. I would take two players in the primes of their career over two guys not quite there yet (though one could argue St.Louis has reached his prime).

You are correct about Bertuzzi and Naslund being more in their prime years. I just have a feeling that LeCavalier could go 100 points on the league next season at the age of 24. Many players have had really big breakout years during their age 24 or 25 seasons.

Where is the respect for Elias/Gomez? You realize that they've been #1 and #2 in points in the league since the all-star break. That combination has been absolute magic - they've been the most dominative duo in the league for a few months now. I don't understand why they don't get the respect their numbers deserve. They've been increadible and there is no reason to think that it won't continue next season.

If Kariya came back to the Ducks in the offseason, he and Fedorov would be high up there. Those two on a line also would make for a very, very fast line.

Thats true, Gomez has actually averaged well over a point per game sinse the All Star break. Now a 100 point season might be a little lofty, but if Gomez churns out an 80 point season I wouldn't be surprised. Nor would I be surprised if Elias returns to 90.

You can have Kariya back if you ask me.

I'm gonna go with some guys who will put up big numbers, but will not be the highest scoring duo...

The Leafs will get big points from Ponikarovsky-Stajan-Antropov (surprisingly large for those players, such as 50-60-50 point seasons)

My call for top point producers will be Leetch-McCabe...I mean...Tanguay-Forsberg (if Forsberg decides the NHL is better than the SEL for him). Young guys...Nash-Zherdev (Zherdev will break out, his season has been shrouded with his international issues)

Thank God that this thread got back on track. I was reading the first 2 pages, and I thought it was going to turn into an argument about how the Penguins are the best team that sucks again.
