Art Ross should be re-named after Gretz.

Will this ever happen? Not yet but maybe after he dies.

Or maybe they should make a Wayne Gretzky throphy. Awarding it to the player who finishes with the most assists per season.

players who may win this throphy...

Peter Forsberg
Jason Allison
Doug Weight
Jos Sakic

This won't ever happen because Art Ross was the one who donated the trophy to the NHL in 1947, and it seems a bit rude to take his name off it posthumously.

It would be like renaming the Stanley Cup after the Canadiens 'cause they've won it so much.

I misread GRETZ on the title and thought it mean GAETZ (sp?), referring to Link Gaetz.... they should name the tropthy after him.

... and then rename the Norris Trophy the Orr Trophy, and rename the Vezina the "WAHHH"?

Maybe there should be an award for the best forward, just as there's a best defenseman and best goalie trophy. Highest scoring player and best forward might go together on a lot of occasions, but the same could be said of Vezina and Jennings, couldn't it?

The Link Gaetz trophy can be given to the craziest player in the NHL who is arrested at least twice during the course of the season.

I wouldn't like to see the greatest player ever's name on a semi-minor trophy (not saying assists are minor, but there are many more important trophies).

Best Overall Forward would be a great place to lend his name.

Do you mean Dominik Hasek, since he won the award twice as many times as Roy?

Take another look at the assists leaders there pal. You forgot the "March Player of the Month," Scott Gomez. He is tied for second (coming into tonight,) two behind Martin St. Louis, who had two goals but no assists this evening.

I do really like the idea of a Wayne Gretkzy Trophy for the assists leader.

I dont like putting Scott Gomez's name on a trophy named after Gretz. Makes me think either too much of Gomez or too little of Gretz.

Best forward would be a much better place for a Gretzky award

Wayne wouldn't accept the removal of Art Ross' name.

I'm a bit uneasy with changing trophies' name but one must admit Wayne Gretzky probably deserves an award named after him.

The problem is that after a while, the rich history of a league can come back and be a problem. It's like the jerseys being retired. It is inevitable that at one point (unless hockey fades away or Earth is destroyed by nasty green men) there will be too many retired jerseys.

It becomes an issue because guys like Howe, Orr, Gretz, Roy and Lemieux all certainly deserves to be remembered. So does Scotty Bowman. Possibly Jacques Lemaire because he's one of the rare few who has been AMAZING as both a player and a coach. You could make a case for Hasek (I wouldn't) and before his career is over, Marty Brodeur's achievements could push him in this category.

And more great players will come. At one point you run out of trophies

Well, Boston has retired the most jerseys, 9 in 80 years. If they keep up at that rate, they won't have enough single-digit numbers for a 20-man roster in just 622 more years.

We've all seen how Futurama solves this problem, and I'm sure in 622 years the greatest human minds will come up with a solution to this problem.

Assists leader is a solid idea, as is best forward, but what about a trophy for the Team Captain that demonstrates the best overall on-ice leadership?

I know that's hard to quantify, but there are few players in the history of the game who've coordinated the men on the ice with him as well as Gretzky seemed to be able to do.

This was in a Futurama episode.

"All the whole numbers are retired, so we use fractions now."

Edit: Whoops, littleHossa beat me to the punch.

Triple Digit Numbers. A descedant of Miroslav Satan wearing "666".....

How about the Sidney Crosby award for the most overhyped player?
