Ugh, I just accidentally saw some rubbish...

Anyone who was exicted about picking Zherdev at 4 was also, just like the GM who drafted him, highly uninformed about this kids' background.

Zherdev KHL bound.

This has to be the biggest shock this decade...

http://www.rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/280160.html

English translation:

Nikolai Zherdev will cross the Atlantic in his turn. The former player of Rangers accepted a new contract with the team of Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the KHL.
Zherdev will evolve/move in particular with Alexander Perezhogin and Alexander Radulov.

Holy crap, he seemingly didnt want to stay and see who would offer him an NHL contract. This really surprises me.

No one in the NHL was going to offer him more than $4 million a season, which is what we wanted. He can make $4-5 million tax free and actually give TV interviews over there. Probably an easy choice for him.

Zherdev, Perezhogin, and Radulov all on the same team... go figure. Way to choose your friends Nikki.

Who cares.

Good luck in Russia. Too bad things didn't work out.

But, once again, who cares?

Not that it matters, but fans that follow where ex players are and go, are the ones who care. It also makes for good banter about hockey on a Tuesday in August.

I suspect that his agent went to the GM's with what Z was wanting and they all came back with a "You're kidding, right?" Good luck to him back home.

Ah, that sucks, I enjoyed watching him play hockey, and I'll be one of the very few who will miss watching him.

When he wins a Stanley Cup

Good luck to Z, i can imagine how much more dynamic he can be on the big ice with much more room. Best of luck

Ok, apparently I jumped the gun on the translation of the Zherdev article. It only means he's PROBABLY going to go there.

It only gets weirder.

Russian sports site Championat, citing a “a source close to management” is reporting that unrestricted free agent Nikolai Zherdev could be days away from signing with Salavat Yulaev Ufa. The unnamed source puts the chances of Zherdev signing for the KHL powerhouse at “more than 90%”, but cautions that the 24-year old winger also has an offer on the table from none other than… the Columbus Blue Jackets.

I find that hard to believe.. Although I do think Hitchcock was close to breaking him into a two way team player I highly doubt Howson would want Zherdev and Filatov exchanging stories of the old days in Russia.

I'm currently in doubting mode on the suggestion Z has a potential offer from the CBJ.

That said, if this is the case - and let me reiterate I don't think it is - I'm presuming that Howson had done due diligence and that Hitch has also. Given that, I'm OK with it, and would actually welcome it.

I'm fully aware of Z's pitfalls/drawbacks/shortcomings. I'm also aware that Hitch put in quite a bit of work on the kid's game and that Z offers something the team needs.

I should again clarify, I doubt he has an offer from Howson, and I'm perfectly comfortable with that as well.

I would like to see Zherdev defend Columbs' colors, like in the past.

However, that just isn't going to happen. No money, too many forwards, and I just don't see management really wanting him back at a price he would accept.

As I posted on the mains, my impression of this is Z or somebody in his camp started this rumor as a way of saying "Look Columbus knows me and they want me back, you should want me for your team too."

If Zherdev comes back he'll be run out of town within two months. Doesn't matter though, because there's not a snowball's chance in hell that happens.

...Was reading back today thru the thread on the Z-Tyutin trade (I consider Backman and Fritsche as somewhat cancelling one another out in this trade, though I'd take one Fritsche on my team over six Backmans) on July 2, 2008:

"Columbus got ripped off IMO."
"Columbus just took it in the butt, im jumping ship."
"Holy criminy, that's a bad deal for Columbus."
"CBJ got ripped."
"And with the first pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft the Columbus Blue Jackets select...John Tavares from the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League."
"So is Columbus making sure they never ever make the playoffs?"
"What an unbelievable group of doofuses are running this organization.
Running it into the &%(&P# GROUND! This is insane."
"That was pretty stupid on Columbus' part."

Meanwhile Tyutin had a great year, and is now one of our top D-men, and Zherdev is heading for Russia after the Rangers basically told him to take a hike.

Sweeeeeet.

This.

Oh and there is no way in h e l l the jackets have offered Zherdev a contract.

If Maclean had half a brain and drafting with any knowledge at all, the jackets could be years ahead of where they are. I love having Tyutin (loved the deal the day it was made) but the 4th overall that is no more that could have been so much (meaning: avoided the guy like the plague to begin with) had he just done his homework is such a shame.

True, that's why Z will never be signed by Howson, but on the other hand Howson will never sign Norrena again either-who had plenty of support around these parts in hindsight. Just sayin.

I've lost hope in Zherdev as most but I don't understand why he has to be dragged through the dirt and scum whenever news about him comes up. Hostile crowd I guess.
