I've had many Sundin vs JR debates with Flyer fans and his 500th compared to Sundin's record breaking assist kind of summed up the two players.

Sundin was awarded an assist that would have broken the team record but he knew he didn't deserve the assist so he skated over to the ref and had them nullify it. Conversely, Roenick scores a goal on something he doesn't even shoot on net and runs around celebrating like he's won the Cup. Now I realize he couldn't nullify it like Mats did but the celebration? Come on JR.

Then you have Mats' 500th. A shorthanded, hat trick goal in overtime.
Just say you're a Sundin fan and you don't like JR and move along. I thought hits 500th was a bit silly, but whatever, it happened. You should take your debate-bait elsewhere though.

This really sucks. He was awesome in his brief stint with the sharks and I'm glad his career ended that way - in a town where the fans loved him. Thank you JR for game 7 against Calgary. Hockey needs more players that actually say what they think. The rehashed, cliched interviews only go so far.

Makes the Sharks' playoff disappointments hurt that much more.

I hope he stays in the org, whether it be TV, asst coach, zamboni driver, w/e.

people didnt like him because he was out spoken. The guy spoke his mind and he knew how to play the game. He told people what they wanted to hear and sometimes what they didnt want to hear. He was a refreshing change from some of these guys who give you the same 5-10 second boring soundbites.
Anyone who says they wouldnt want him on their hockey club when he was on top of his game is a ****ing liar.
Good Luck JR.

One of my favorites all time even though he didn't bring his game to LA. Enjoy retirement and the Hall of Fame election JR!

I'm totally bummed

I'll miss seeing JR on the ice. He was one of my favorite players long before he joined the Sharks.

(And I agree, sharkohol. The exact opposite of the storybook ending we were hoping for.)

Sorry Canadians but I'm really hoping he can host a panel show on ESPN and promote hockey in the USA.

The 2:00-2:30 mark of that video describes perfectly how he played the game. I expected to wake up to news about the Sharks and Heatley, not this. Loved him while he was here, and although you could tell his skills were slipping, I'm pretty sure just about every Sharks fan wanted him back. That shows the kind of hockey player he was.

Obviously you saw none of his one year with the Kings (@ $4.9m). 2 goals in his first game , then only 7 more the entire season (and quite worthless defensively).

Then he went on to 2 semi-productive years in SJ, at a much lower salary.

Thanks for nothing, JR.

Ya that sucks. He had a rude awakening after Phoenix and got his crap and attitude together. He gave Doug Wilson his word, and he never once faltered. He brought heart and drive to our team and I guarantee we are worse for having lost him.

That said, would you rather he have retired as a king as a legendary jackass, or realized his issues, made some pretty impressive attitude changes for that late in life, and retired with some pride. I respect the hell out of him for doing so.

Thanks for the Glorious Memories JR. He was my favorite player because of his ability, passion, and heart. I will always remember his booming hits, his amazing courage to play through pain and of course that series clinching goal against Toronto in 2003/2004. One of the greatest American players of the generation. JR will be missed, the hockey world will never be able to replace him.

He totally made Gretz's head bleed and made Hrudey look like swiss cheese.

Atta boy JR, like putty in Vaughn's hands.

Always was one of my favorites as well. Sad to see him go, but congratulations on a great career, it's a real shame he didn't get a chance to win the cup.
