If we have the 3.9 to spend I think Burke should go for it, totes.

Edmonton might be a team who could jump in and take a shot for his services. But i imagine he is KHL bound

I'd still make a bid for him. I'm not hating on 3.9, and it's a lot better than trading for his rights and then trying to sign him. Also known as pulling a Calgary.

I doubt it costs $3.9 to sign him.

And as a UFA, I think the Leafs should definitely take a look here.

Leafs have to be at least interested..... He is a project, but one that if works out, would have a major payoff

It would have been the Rangers accepting the 3.9 million for 1 year then trading him. From our persepctive we would have been better off with a Stempnuik for Zherdev trade.

Obviously Rangers did not want to accept anything back for him because they need the cap space. Very surprised someone did not offer a draft pick for a signed Zherdev !!!

He wanted 4.5 before arbitration. He will want at least 4, and can get 5+ in the KHL. Who knows what he will do.

Zherdev went through salary arbitration and was granted a 1 year 3.9 million dollar contract. New York cannot afford! We'd still have to honour that, wouldn't we? I mean, why else would he sign with another team for less money?

I would even go as far as rounding 3.9 up into a nice whole 4. Yeah, I said it.

I'm sure he will get at least that, for much longer term. I'm not sure I'm interested at this point.

I'm disappointed we spend $4 000 000 on 2nd line forwards and defensive defenceman, and won't take a chance on this type of guy, but I'll let Burke build the team.

who else has the cap-space to sign him at 4M per for 2-3 seasons? I don't see how we could not sign him if he is willing. At 24 years of age and with his potential....I definitely think we shoud.

I would bet a lot of money that we don't though...

I think we are saying the same thing. It was 3.9 million or nothing for the Rangers and it was a one year deal. I think he will get more and and a longer contract in the open market.

Rangers let him walk because they did not want any salary back in a trade or they were not offerred a draft pick.

I repeat he would have been a better acquisition in a sign and trade (1 year at 3.9 million) than competing in the UFA market and perhaps making another Blake type mistake.

Regardless of the outcome, I would be mad as hell if the leafs let a talented player like this go for nothing. At least a pick or something....

If there were any teams willing to sign him now as a UFA at $3.9 mil, you figure they would have called Sather up and offered him something for Zherdev before he was UFA.

Depends....does he insist on a long term deal? I certainly wouldn't want to get sucked into one of those 5, 6, 7 year deals...

Apparently he's looking for long term (I think I saw that mentioned in a few threads). I wouldn't puke blood at a 4 or 5 year front loaded contract. Like 5/4/3/3/2, with an option on the last year to renegotiate and extend (similar to what we did with Sundin, are those types of clauses still allowed under the CBA?). It gives him a cap hit of 3.4, you have to give him at least the first two years as a try out, and if you don't like what you see after the first two years, the remaining years on his contract would be easier to move. And if he does pan out, the last year has a clause for renegotiation where he can once again get his salary bumped up if he plays well.

I'd give him similar to what Grabovski makes on his 3 yr deal, maybe a few hundred k more per year but nothing more.
