The rumor is a good platform to ask Burkie to substanciate the rumor, and get his opinion on the player by some reporter.
If Burke was in some sort of talks with slats he will say so. If not, then the next question is "is he interested".
We'll hear about it either way soon enough.
Zherdev's would like to stay in the NHL first and foremost,if there isn't someone willing to give him the money he will play in Russia. He wants to play in the nhl though!
Burke will not look good imo if he's not interested.
Zherdev is to good not to at least offer a contract of 3 years@ $4,300,000 or even 5 years @ $4,800,000.
Speed, skill, scoring and youth are atributes that should not be ignored, no matter the residence of his passport or his style of play.
OK, you can't say he doesn't sign Euros and then rationalize when we name Euros he signed/ drafted. Just say he is not tough or gritty enough for this team. Jeez.
I agree with this comment 100%. There are tough SOB Euros and there are soft, finesse-playing Canadians/North Americans. Call players for what they are, but don't label them with bad stereotypes. It's just lazy thinking.
as a big Nash fan I would watch Jackets games. Zherdev was almost always the best player on the ice. He's so sick with the puck and only 24. I would be really excited if Burke signs this player. We haven't had a skill like him since Mogilny.
Wow, do not want at that price. That's obscene. Zherdev will be looking at a one year deal around 3-4 M if he wants to stay in the NHL.
Agreed. If Zherdev had already reached his potential, then yes. But that's too much money for too long for a guy we still HOPE will SOMEDAY reach his potential. I want Zherdev at the right price (and with proper expectations), but a contract like that is suicide.

Almo had a bit of a mean streak. And I love how he got pissed off about winning the Lady Byng

UFA signing for 1 year is possible i guess, but he wants a long term deal to play in the NHL,and the rags didn't want to. I think he will be signing long term or taking a hike back to Russia.
He's a 60 point player now ,why would he sign long term cheap after getting a unexpected bonus of UFA'cy earlier than expected, is what i'm thinking.
4.8 on 5 years and potential to add 10-12 points and become 70 point player with about 25 goals is worth it.
The guy wasn't even on the 1st power-play much with the rags. Rarely got a 20 minute game even. He could get that on the leafs easily, and be a 70 point guy imo.
Thats the way i see it anyhow and thats why the inflated price on a long term deal.
Zherdev would be a great pickup, former top 5 pick, and tremendously skilled forward, could easily put up 70/80 points with pp time and the right linemates. I would give him a 4 year 20 million dollar contract, personally.
I'd pass on Zherdev. I know someone who coached him and he's absolutely miserable to deal with. All kinds of talent (drafted #3 and was talked about as a possibility for #1 in a strong 2003 draft) but he's a totally disrespectful punk who acts up in practice and poisons a dressing room.

i agree, but would rather 5 years@ $24,000,000 lol.

If there is anyone who can fix personality issues/lazies ... its going to be the Burke/Wilson combo.
Plus, give the guy a break....most of the people here would agree that more than 50% of males under 24years old are in many ways immature.
I think he is fixable, probably the $ + fame got to his head at a young age, that doesn't mean its a lost cause.

Well obviously you start with a lower offer, btu if need be, I'd be willing to pay Zherdev up to 5 mill per year.

JFJ paid the big bucks to non elite players, and give them NTC. If Zherdev is given ice time on the leafs he wll easily hit 70/80 points, and take over games, at 5 mill per thats a steal.

I didn't realize JFJ and Reggie Houle posted on HF Boards
Seriously, a GM should only sign Zherdev if he hates the coach and wants to drive him bonkers. A 5-year contract to Zherdev would be suicidal. Ever hear Doug MacLean talk about this punk's attitude? He'll tear a team apart.
I don't think Zherdev would survive in Toronto with the fans, media and Ron Wilson.
He's not very good defensively, he disappears from shift to shift so consistency is an issue. On the other hand defense can be taught through hard work and if Zherdev is willing to change his whole approach to hockey and actually work harder instead of relying on his natural ability to get him by, then I think he could be a great player in the league not only improving his defensive game but improving his offensive output. He sort of reminds me of Yashin where you see the talent is there but the drive just does not seem to be there and you really don't want that rubbing off on other players. On a side note is anyone else disgusted that players who put up say 60 points or less get paid 5million + a season. How on earth did professional sports get so carried away? It's sickening.
Why would NY waste $3mil over the next 3 yrs on Kotalik, but not $3.9 on Zherdev?
The $3.9 is only $650,000 more than they offered.
Sather has lost his mind.
It could have something to do with the fact Zherdev doesn't have the drive to be the best player he can be & rumors are he can be a pain in the ***. The fact that the Rangers, who are a team that has had their offensive struggles & they just walk away like that says alot to me.
