Nikolai Zherdev becomes a UFA

Should he be someone the Canucks look into? There's no question he has high end offensive talent, although his heart is another issue.

I know we have a glaring need for a puck moving defenseman; however, our offense isn't looking all that sparkling either. Might be a good fit on the second line with, say, Burrows and Kesler?

I wonder if AV's effort rewards would help Zherdev change his lazy ass play. Probably not.

I'd love to have him on the second line, but he's too expensive. Maybe we could hire David Copperfield to make Demitra disappear..

Too expensive for what he brings every game. Surely not a Mike Gillis player.

and Wellwood is?

But yeah, pass from me too, mainly because of the asking price.

i believe he already stated that he likes the travel of the atlantic division,

i highly doubt he would join a team with one of the longest plane trip schedules in the league

Unload Demitra and sign Zherdev.

I know Gillis won't do that but I would.

I don't think Demitra needs much help to be virtually invisible on the ice.

At around $1m, Wellwood definitely fits the mould. His upside is much higher than his salary.

Not necessary Demitra seems quite capable of disappearing all on his own.

Unless the Rangers were being pig-headed, you have to think that there wasn't anyone who wanted to trade even a mid-round pick for him at a $3.9 million price tag. If you can get him for ~$3 million I think the Canucks should seriously consider it. Despite his 'laziness', Zherdev is a quality player, so even if he doesn't step his game up any more you're still getting value at that price. It seems like a good buy low opportunity to me.

It would also fill another forward spot, further opening up the opportunity to move a forward or two for a defenseman.

He has the magical ability to injure himself without moving. That's talent.

I'd consider Zherdev, but not at anything close to $4 million.

He most likely heads to the KHL.

Haha he would pack his bags and hide in Russia after one of AV's "motivational" media call outs.

Well, the Canucks don't really need top six wingers - if you're going to spend $3m on a forward right now, you really want it to be a center.

Spending that money on a winger would really limit the quality of defenseman you'd be able to bring back in a trade as well.

That was running with the assumption that signing a winger would move Kesler back to center. If the team wants to keep him on the wing though I see how that would be a problem.

If the team had Zherdev in the fold, I'd go with something like this at least to start the season with Demitra injured:

Sedin-Sedin-Samuelsson
Burrows-Kesler-Hansen/Raymond
Bernier-Wellwood/Hodgson-Zherdev

As for the defenseman, you'd definitely be looking for someone young on a cheap contract. A team like Nashville or Dallas with a ton of young defenseman might be willing to let one go for a package of young forwards/picks.

I don't see him taking almost a $1 million paycut to play here in Vancouver, with our forward logjam as it is. I know the idea is to move Demitra for a defender, but... I've already stated my piece on that.

I'd rather pass, to be honest.

Zherdev doesn't fit our cap structure. Sure you could move Demitra and sign Zherdev to a multi year deal, but then where do you get the money to resign Kesler next off season? You could lose Mitchell to resign Kesler, but that would mean next season we'd have a defense of Edler, Bieksa, Salo, and potentially three minimum (or close to) salary guys.

Well, I'd rather have Lang at center and Kesler at wing, than Kesler at center and Zherdev at wing. And I think you could get Lang for less than $3m. He stands a high risk of injury, but since Zherdev only shows up for half a season, it's a wash.

Kesler just looked so much better at wing. Some people attribute that to Sundin. I don't.

Not much chance Zherdev will be interested in coming to the Wetcoast according to a recent interview:
Quote:
- And on what team in NHL you would like to continue your career?

- To begin with, it must be a team that has a need for me. Thatís why Iíll answer your question this way: it would be nice to play on one of the teams in the division that the Rangers play in.

- To show the New Yorkers they were wrong?

- No, it is simply that when I played in Columbus, there were many long flights. Itís more interesting to play in the Atlantic Division, and you fly much less there. Accordingly, you get less tired.

- Are there any teams in the NHL that you dreamed of playing for as a child?

- Yes, I always liked Detroit.

I'd take a chance on Zherdev. A 3mil price tag is doable although I believe that's what the rangers offered and he declined. $3.9 I would do if Demitra was shipped off.
