You know, a few seasons ago we brought in Grier and Brown because the team realized it is not good to have your star player spending minutes PKing. Marleau was never supposed to be a PK key on this team, and I don't think he is now. MItchell and Pavs (or perhaps Nichol) are the PKing centers on this team. Michalek, and uhh, well, ok, not Grier, Plihal or Goc anymore, but probably someone else, are the other forwards.
Yes, Marleau was a competent PKer, but he was not, and should not, ever an incredibly vital part of the PK. I agree he's a very good all around forward, but to keep saying how great on the penalty kill he is is not an effective argument for keeping him.
I don't want heatley because of his length of contract, but if he had only 1-2 years left, I would take him over Marleau on THIS team 99% of the time.
Detroit and Hank Z disagree with you. That's why Marleau/Michalek were back on the PK to begin with - Todd Mac is Detroit school, likes to have a little bite to his PK.
If the Heatley deal goes down, I'll be upset. Swapping Heatley for Marleau is not the move this team needs. Either we blow the entire thing up, or we stick with the core after stripping marleau of the C. And that's not even taking into consideration the contract issues.
as the drama unfolds, so do the days of our lives.
This is weird.. these rumors have been going on for so long its hard to keep reading about it all. Now a 3-way pops out, Heatley to SJ, Marleau to LA, 2 from LA to Ottawa. Patty going to a division rival is just... Crazy!! or is it!?!
this whole thing might make alittle sense when you take Patty's NTC into consideration. Marleau might just be willing to waive that NTC if he doesnt have to uproot his family in the process. More so I think then if they tried to trade him cross country. Patty going to LA is just a hop, skip and a jump from SJ. His Family wouldnt have to move at all. I think this rumor could have some legitimacy to it.
Buccigross later said that he was comfortable with the story because "it made a lot of sense in a lot of ways," as far as what the teams need. He also said he could see conditions shifting this deal into one directly between Ottawa and Los Angeles.
This means Marleau might not be involved whatsoever?
The funniest part to this whole rumour is why would la trade frolov and stoll for marleau. Marleau is a small upgrade over stoll or frolov but not enough to get rid of both.

It makes it sound like SJ will not be involved whatsoever
Apparently on a radio show last night, Buccigross said he was forwarded an email from a VERY prominent league source (someone even casual NHL fans would know) saying that this deal was virtually done, and then he got another email later basically confirming the report.
I just don't see it either. However, if they were just listing the key peices (then why list Stoll...) it could make some sense.
SJ gets: Heatley + Lee (8.3m in - 9.3 out)
LA gets: Marleau + Kelly (8.8m in - 6.5 out)
Ottowa gets: Frolov + Stoll + Cheechoo (9.5m in - 10m out)
So :
SJ trades Marleau + Cheechoo for Heatley + Lee (good deal)
LA trades Frolov + Stoll for Marleau + Kelly (Marleau may be a safer bet than Frolov to resign, and Kelly >= Stoll)
Ottowa trades: Heatley + Kelley for Frolov + Stoll + Cheechoo (better than Edmonton deal)
I think a trade involving at least two of these teams is going to happen. It just doesn't make sense that Bucci would stick by his guns after having the rumor debunked so heavily by other credible reporters. I think we all know how much DW hates tampering...he wasn't too happy when Ehrhoff's name came up in a player trade several weeks ago. All it takes is one of the GMs to be 100% against any information getting leaked, and the other two will do anything they can to cater to those wishes, especially if they have any hope of maintaining good relations or getting a deal done for their own team. Think about it: DW might be willing to trade Marleau right now, but I don't think he wants a peep of it getting out before it becomes official. You have to be as cautious as possible in case a deal falls through, and the last thing you want is for that to happen, and Marleau to play the entire season knowing Wilson attempted to trade him away before the season even started.

Possible if Marleau refuses to waive his NTC. (Frankly, if it's true he doesn't want to move out of California and IF there's slim chance he re-signs here in SJ, I would think it's odd he would refuse to waive his NTC to go to LA. Might as well spend a season there seeing if you truly like the team and area, than risk it when you are a UFA next offseason.)
Also, I'd be surprised if it became an OTT-LA deal w/ Heatley going to LA. Lombardi (I think) and Ron Hextall were pretty strong against acquiring Heatley. Why intentionally get off on the wrong foot.

I also thought Heatley was against going to LA.

After the past 5 seasons, I'm really not opposed to anything that will change this lineup. I cannot believe there are so many who think things are going to change with the current team.
