Bits o' Checkers Business

The Checkers have made qualifying offers to eight players, the maximum allowed under ECHL rules.

Michel Leveille, F
Mitch Carefoot, C
Peter Tsimikalis, C
Matthew Ford , F
Marty Guerin , F
Jared Nightingale. D
Kevin Schaeffer , D
Jeff Jakaitis , G

Mitch Carefoot and Kevin Schaeffer did not suit up for the Checkers last season. The were acquired at the ECHL end-of-year meeting when the "future considerations" from the season's trades are worked out.

Qualifying offers remain open until August 1. If the players are unsigned, then the Checkers will retain their ECHL rights for the next season.

No sooner had the Checkers made qualifying offers than two of the qualified players left for Europe.
Forward Marty Guerin left for SG Pontebba in Italy and goalie Jeff Jakaitis also signed in Italy, with the Val Pusteria Wolves, where he will be a teammate of former Ranger Rem Murray.

The Checkers signed their first player for the upcoming season, 25 year-old forward Chris Capraro. This will be Capraro's 3rd season in Charlotte. Last year, he scored 9G and 20A in 33 games for the Checkers.

Welcome back, bmoak! Keep the updates coming.

Question for you: whom from last year's Checkers team do you anticipate making a strong push for a job in HFD this year?

Hi bmoak. I remember you. You also post on OTG if I'm not mistaken. Good to see ya around.

Man, whatever happened to Nate Guenin? I know he went to the Flyers and had a stint but he disappeared.

He's been playing for the Flyers AHL team for a couple years, but signed with the Penguins earlier this month.

Weekly cap for this year is $11,800 for a maximum roster of 20 players. Weekly floor is $8,300. Average would be a few bucks over $500/week. Rookie salary is $360/week. Minimum for non-rookie players is $400/week. Players assigned by NHL/AHL affiliates count as $525/week toward the cap.
