I can imagine how that conversation went:

Random coach: "John, You've been traded."
Garland: "Where?"
RC: "Um, those guys right over there."

I bet he had to fight the urge to run across the field to join a first place team.

Ditto. Never heard of that before. That is crazy, you would think they would wait until after the game to finalize the deal...

Good luck with Thome

He is a great player and will help you out down the stretch but his back is worrisome and he hasn't played the field in 3 yrs so he should be used as a pinch hitter and occasional fielder.

Not the player he used to be but he still is decent and is a great lockerroom guy.

Sad to see him go but the White Sox have fallen apart and it was time to move on from our older core of last few years.

Hope he gets his WS ring

It was funny listening to Lyons and Jim Watson speculate about where he might spend the night... in the team hotel or where?

Um, guys... do a little research, you'll find the guy grew up in Granada Hills... If he doesn't still live there, I'm sure he has a friend he can call.

Both deals make a lot of sense and I do think Thome will need to play a little 1B. He does need ABs to stay fresh and you can get enough ABs pinch hitting for a month IMO.

I have to wonder how much Thome will get to play prior to the WS. He'll be an ideal DH for the WS but I just don't know how much we'll see of him during the regular season and the playoffs. In any case, I like the acquisition for the most part and I hope he gets some starts at 1B.

Too bad he can't play catcher because Martin has been pretty much worthless the entire season. I hope Torre just let Martin bat 8th where he belongs and stop trying so hard to get him jump started at the expense of the dodgers.

Well, Thome will be a very good help in the playoffs. Let's hope we get a handle on which guy is going to be our number 5 pitcher. The Blue has about 4 of them.

Good luck to Thome. One of the real good guys in the game. I know he was disappointed that it didn't work out in Philly. He has a Jeremy Roenick-like positive vibe in Philly still.

Hopefully the Roenick comparisons stop there.

Not really. The whole point of trading for Thome was to use him as a DH in the WS and in a PH situations.

It's a darn shame that he can't play defense because I wouldn't mind sitting Loney for a few games and have Thome bat behind Manny.

Agreed. Loney is not clutch. Thome should have pinched hit for Loney in the 8th last night. 2 on and 2 out. Then Torre could have put in a defesive replacement for Thome or Move Belliard to 3rd, Loretta to 1st and the O Dog at 2nd.

His RISP and RBI total is actualy damn nice. If you define clutch by game winning home runs then look elsewhere.

Is anyone else concerned that the dodgers may not even make it to the playoffs? And even if they did, how are they going to overcome the 1-2 punch of Carpenter/Wainwright to make it out of the NL?

If the Dodgers win the division with another team from the Pacific winning the Wild Card, the Dodgers will wind up playing St Louis in the NLDS. If the Dodgers win the wild card and Colorado wins the division, then the Dodgers play Philadelphia.

Either way, if we want to get to the WS, it's gonna have to go through St Louis imo.
