Murphy's 5'10.5" height from NHL Central Scouting should be taken as accurate. NHLCS has a guy go around to do official measurements for draft eligible players, so that would be correct.

I wouldn't be to optimistic on him growing though, as he was basically the same size in MM, maybe just adding half an inch in the past two years.

Is Ryan Murphy the next Kris Russell?

Seeing that Russell put a ton of points in Juniors, and so is Murphy, will he be the Russell? Russell has struggled mightily in the NHL. He gets beat alot when hes on defense and hasnt really scored at all this year. I hope the Jackets take Murphy this year, and hopefully he isnt Russell 2.0. How's Murphy's skating, shot, and defense compare to Russell and everyone else in the draft?

Most smaller Dmen should aim to be like Rafalski and Timmonen. Neither is big, as both are sub 6 feet, but are very good NHL dmen. Play on the top pairing. That's who smaller Dmen aspire to be. Whether the develop their defensive games to equal those guys is the test for all smaller blueliners. Letang, for example is improving his defensive game and is worthy of his all-star game appearance.

I know what he can do, I just would like to know if his game will transfer over and wonder does he have the best shot in the draft for a dman? How about skating, defense, and passing. Obviously not because then he would be going 1st overall but where does he rank in terms of those categories?

He's such a great talent.

He plays a lot like Erik Karlsson. Keep in mind Ottawa drafted him when he was 5'10, 155lbs

He will be an NHL-ALL Star one day imo, people will always look at his size, but at the end of the game, you will be amazed at what he just did.

Kris Russell was easily one of the best defensemen in the CHL in the last ten years in terms of his ability to control games. Even just watching him on TV you could see that he ran the show and everyone else was just along for the ride. Murphy isn't quite there yet.

Means nothing in terms of NHL upside though. I still don't think Ryan Ellis is a great NHL prospect, and he certainly controls a lot of the games he's played this year.

Scott Niedermayer didn't have too much trouble in the league and he was a midget(If he's 6'0 so am I.)

Not big, but 6'0 I wouldnt call a midget.

See it as a compliment.

True but at 5'11 if that is his actual height I wouldn't be surprised if Murphy was as tall or just a bit taller than Niedermayer. No way Nieds is actually 6'0.

Who knows. Murphy has talent, but so did hundreds of other similar type/size dmen and most of them would love to be russell.

that was one of the worse videos supporting a prospect I have ever seen

first, it had Cherry...second, it has Sinatra singing...third, it kept showing the same highlights over and over again...

I like Murphy well enough, but that video stunk

Ryan Murphy is a special hockey player, I can't comment on Kris Russell since I don't live out west, but I would take a guess that he was not quite like Murphy is.

Coming from a huge OHL fan, no dmen are playing at the level of Ryan Murphy right now.

A simple question: I love what Murphy can do with the puck, do you think an NHL team might convert him to a forward?

Imo that'd be extremely useless since teams are drafting him for his offense on the blue line. Teams want that Howitzer. And thats one thing you can tell by just looking at his highlights. When you have a player deking through a whole OHL team and blasting a slapshot by the goalie from the blue line, you keep it that way.

I think his comparison is more of a Paul Coffey

I'd love to nab him if the Devils pick up their play.

Being Kris Russel shouldn't be what Murphy is worried about....he should be worried about being Angelo Esposito.

Angelo Esposito. That's what you worry about.

Why would anyone convert him to a forward? He has been one fo the most successful defenceman in the CHL, he has proven at the CHL level that he can be an effective defenceman.

Secondly, if a team really did not think that he could do it as a defenceman, they would just pass and take a forward of similar talent.

He's the most talented player in the draft. Great foot speed, incredibly shifty, great release, makes a great first pass. Getting better defensively as well.

Expecting him to stand out come January 19th.

Murphy is better than Russell was at 17. I think he's about 8-9 points away from typing him in about 30 games less.

Not only is Murphy way ahead of where Russell was at 17 but he's a hell of a lot more talented as well. No comparison.
