I can't recall another player with more frequent solo dashes up the ice that produce absolutely nothing

He goes into the zone and takes shots from the worst possible angles imaginable. At least Rielly would skate in the center of the ice and get a good shot off while on the rush. Murphy is awful through and through.

The stats speak for themselves:

Morgan Rielly: 5 games, 4 points, +4

Ryan Murphy: 5 games, 0 points, Even

And Murphy was brought as the PP specialist and as a pure offensive dman, and received the lionshare of the PP minutes...for most of the PPs today, he was almost on for the full 2 minutes and created...nothing.

What did Justin Pogge's stats look like in the WJC?

Ok, and how did that turn out in terms of his NHL career?

I don't get it

What does someone's NHL career have to do with helping Canada win a gold medal at the WJHC? They are completely separate things.

I'm sorry, I shouldn't be ragging on Murphy so much; after all, you win and lose as a team, and as a whole, Canada was terrible today.

Murphy just left a lot to be desired, IMO, and was frustrating to watch. His track record shows that he could have contributed more.

Murphy is completely ineffective, but let's not forget to assign blame on two players who deserve a lot of criticism: Malcolm Subban for being shaky for 80% of the tournament (who looks that bad against Slovakia?) and Dougie Hamilton, who is a far cry from the Alex Pietrangelo everyone's so quick to compare him to.

Also added bonus is they're two Bruins prospects...

Just showing that this tournament is not an indication of future NHL potential. I understand this tournament's a big deal for Canada, but far too much stock is put into a young player's performance in these games.

I don't think that was the point he was trying to make though...

I think we've been watching the WJC's in Canada long enough to know that. But thanks for your fresh insight.

Oh, I realize that

In 2002 the Leafs had 5 players on team Canada, and not a single one still plays for Toronto and not a single one became an NHL star

It's just frustrating that Murphy, who was supposed to be the go-to offensive dman, and who received a lot of PP time, didn't even produce a single point. I mean, what else was he there to do?

Is this a WJC thread or a Ryan Murphy thread?

Well considering we are currently in the middle of the WJC I think it would be both.

Murphy put on one of the most disappointing defensive performances in the WJC that I can remember and I have been watching this tournament for 15 years. He was completely useless. I do not blame him so much as I do the coach.

Dumba should have been there over Murphy easily.

Dumba was brutal in camp. They made the right decision on Dumba but I can't say the same about Murphy.

If he can't figure out how to use his linemates he won't be successful in the NHL. He's got a bomb from the point but his small stature persistence to do things all on his own will keep him behind. I don't understand all the hype
