Don Cherry says Ryan Murphy will go #1 overall

Sure, he's predicted Hall and Stamkos, but this one seems pretty far off.

I love this kid as much as the next person, but this is a stretch to predict Murphy to take down Larsson, Couturier or Nugent-Hopkins.

I still don't expect him to make the WJ team, especially with Ryan Ellis still hanging around.

Hate to say this but Ryan Murphy is playing in the OHL. I'm not going to accuse Don Cherry of being biased but the projected top 3 picks are playing in the WHL, the Q and europe. He likely hasn't seen them play live. I'm not an expert but most scout have those 3 guys first and then the rest of the projections are all over the board. I wouldn't be surprised to see this guy fly up the rankings.

He said it last year, hes just bringing it up again because the way Murphy is playing.

Its not a stretch though. It was a strech before he started this season, it isn't now.

He "predicted" Stamkos and Hall.
I think they were no-brainers for most people.

The premise of the whole segment was awful. He made it sound like he's the only person who ever suggested such a notion. Pretty sure a lot of people knew those guys would be the probable #1's as soon as they broke into the OHL.

He also predicted many years ago that Rob Schremp would go first overall in his draft year.

I'm not a Don Cherry hater but he's obviously OHL biased.

I predict Murphy will NOT be one of the first two defensemen taken. Take that Cherry.

Don Cherry is hella smart, but there's no way he's going number 1.

Don Cherrys a bonehead but I highly doubt he said that. I googled what you said and the first thing that came up about that was this post. Ovechkin was called the first overall pick for that draft but EVERYONE for years before.

Don Cherry has been way more right than wrong on many issues than most on here.
This is not a statement on this particular subject but he could be right.
Murphy is probably the most talented player in this draft. His only perceived issue is his weight.
So is it that far-fetched he could be No.1?
So far IMHO none of the Big 3 has had an overly strong season to make a big statement but Murphy has.

You act like Murphy is some random defensemen who who nothing special. You can disagree, but the people saying Cherry is crazy for suggesting this has obviously never watched Murphy this season. Hes easily been the most impressive 2011 draft candidate, while the "Big 3" aren't having that special a seasons.

He will likely be picked in the top 4 spots and I am not denying his talent at all, but he wont get picked first overall.

It's safe to say many posters on here hasn't seen more than one of these players with the probability that they haven't seen any.
It's just a hate on for Cherry.

How do you know? Before the start of this season, Murphy was maybe top 10, slightly outside, he was a defensive liability and it didn't help he was only "176" lbs and 5'11 (Which for some reason is considered quite small on HFBoards)

This season hes improved so much from his already incredible talent, hes no longer a defensive liability at all, he controls the play every time hes on the ice, and hes arguably the best skater in the 2011 draft. Hes improving his stock so much that its not absurd to say Murphy may steal a good spot on the 2010 WJC.

If Murphy continues to excell and improve, and the "Big 3" don't pick start showing similar strides (Not saying they're playing bad just not improving as expected), its not delusional at all to say he may go first overall.

No one is saying he isn't a talented kid.

People can have opinions.

Don't get your feelings hurt if someone doesn't think your favorite prospect will go first overall.

People can have opinions, but its completely wrong to say he has no chance to go first overall.

I've noticed you like to pick and choose things from peoples post and ignore other parts so you can answer a certain way.

For one, I said people can have opinons, but saying theres no way hes going to go first overall is not "stating an opinion", its more like you try to put it off as fact. Also, I never said "zomg murphy definitely going first overall others suck he #1!!!!!!!!", you try to put it off as I'm saying hes a lock for first overall, when I'm definitely not.

Where did I make it look like I was mad people didn't think that? I have an opinion too and just because you and others don't agree with it doesn't mean my feelings are hurt
