http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...s-of-2009.html

I disagree, Spacek still worth 3.8 maybe not for 3 years but right now he still worth it.

What do you think ?

Anyway, I hate Proteau

I thought the Gionta signing, both in terms of money and length, was worse than the Spacek signing, if we had to pick one.

I also don't think this off-season was as bad as the previous two in terms of bad contracts. The Gomez / Drury signings, Campbell, etc. were all terrible, but I didn't get that vibe this season. Even Antropov for four million a season isn't bad.

Oh wow, I didn't actually read the article but man... that's terrible reporting.

Another goof of a reporter that doesn't understand that good defensmen with great slapshot + Andrei Markov= superstar. We finally got our shot from the point secured for more then 1 year and he's an excellent 2-way defensmen, one of Gainey's best signatures.

That.

Spacek was earning like 3.6 last season, or something close to that.

He had a career year, and this goof of THN really thinks that a UFA, with a career year, will take a paycut? He had a slight increase of his salary.

Hockey, a world of goof.

Thankfully we don't still have Carbonneau. His lines would be:

Markov-Gill
Hammer-Mara
Spacek-O'Byrne
Gorges

What I gathered from that article "Waahhh wahhh I hate the habs, I'm a jealous retard who knows nothing about Hockey QQ" "Why can't my team have markov-spacek duo! wahhhh wahhhh QQ"

LMAO

Gorges wouldn't be a 7th though, he'd be a forward.

comparing them to guys on only their second contract is laughable. What a joke. Were any of those comparable players UFA's? The Regyhr one is the only one that he can truly compare but if he were a UFA he would have got more than Komisarek.

He's comparing RFA signings with UFA signings. There is a reason UFA signings can't be brought up as comparables in RFA arbitration.

Puck-moving D-men capable of playing top-pairing minutes against top-pairing opposition and play special teams do not come cheap. Quibble about Spacek's age all you want, I'm quite convinced his addition will be very positive to the Canadiens.

Comparing Spacek to Regehr is particularly amusing since they are so different in style. Apparently the vital importance of transition in the post-lockout NHL has gone unnoticed by M. Proteau, but then that shouldn't be so surprising since his publication's inability to analyze worth a damn has long since relegated them to irrelevance. Their content is generally worth a read only for the entertainment value.

Spacek will even be better with Markov.

This guy is on drugs, he talks like Spacek is a washed up player.

I'm crossing my fingers for this

Markov-Mara
Hammer-Georges
Spacek-Gill

1 offensive D and 1 defensive for reliability, until one of Subban or Weber is ready and Georges is traded, i want Hammer to be THE offensive D on his pairing, in a terrible year last season he managed to finish 10th in all the defensmens for even-strengh points. Mara will be perfect for Markov imo, he's MUCH better then Komo to support the offense, although not nearly as physical, he clears the net just as good. His shot will certaintly help us put a couple more in.

lol at comparing him to Seabrook and Burns who make 3.5 million. How much would they make as a UFAs, Mr. Proteau of the Hockey News? Thanks.

Well he is right about all the other ones.

And Spacek's deal isn't great, but it sn't bad either unless he soils the bed. I think this was more a shot at the Habs because it's cool for TO idiots to attack the Habs.

But I find that the contracts handed out to Komisarek worst. He may be younger than Spacek, but there is no upside in Komi. Only 10 lucky points.

Chris Neil for $2m is a lot and he does mention Brashear as an honorable mention. I mean c'mon. That much for goons.

I don't generally read the Hockey News, because essentially, the news is old news by the time they go to print, let alone deliver the magazine. And the quality of some of the reports is questionable at best.

Man I should've become a sports journalist. Seems you don't have to be very bright, know a whole lot nor research anything very hard to do this job. Easy money.

I really don't get it. Spacek is showing no signs of deteriorating and is exactly the kind of veteran mobile d-man we need to usher in the new kids like subban, weber, carle and fischer. He'll be 38 at the end of his contract, and for a guy who doesn't play a terribly physical game, that's not that old. Why do you think Schneider has lasted this long? And yeah, comparing him to guys like Seabrook is senseless. Seabrook's next contract will probably be in the 5 million range for sure.

There's a risk with Spacek because it is a 3 years contract and he's not getting any younger.

But that's about it for the bad part.

That guy was no.1 defenseman on the Sabres last year, got 45 pts, doing so and is a left handed shooter for the PP. Right now, base on last year, he's worth every single penny of this 3.8M per year contract.

By the 3rd year of that contract, Hamrlik 5.5 will have come off the book. So even if the offense really decreased, i'm a strong believer than Spacek will still be a valuable asset and will be on the 2nd pairing as Hamrlik replacement at that point. (which will be a 2Million saving on Hamrlik)

I see this deal as a no-brainer.

THN isn't really a credible hockey publication anymore, and hasn't been for a while.
