Conditional pick <Leetch Trade>

Can anybody tell me what the terms of the conditional draft pick are in the Leetch trade?

it hasn't been reported anywhere but my guess (and it is just a guess) that it will be tied to how toronto does in the playoffs

Which seems strange. Wouldn't the terms need to be sent to the league in order for the deal to be approved?

the terms of the deal would have to be sent to the league but they don't have to be made public...the terms of a conditional player or pick in a trade aren't released unless they get leaked

I think the conditional draft pick depends on how Leetch plays but as mentioned earlier it could also depend on how the team does.

It has been reported

The Leafs didn't give up a player on their current roster, but they paid a heavy price because they trade away prospects Maxim Kondratiev and Jarkko Immonen, their first-round National Hockey League draft pick in 2004 and their 2005 second-round selection in exchange for Leetch. The Leafs also will receive a conditional draft choice from the Rangers, either a fourth-round pick in June or a third-round selection in 2005.

It's a fourth in 2004 or a third in 2005

but that doesn't say what the terms of the condition are...what determines if it is a 4th this year or a 3rd next year??? that is what the question was

Something like that would imply Rangers' choice. Or perhaps Leafs' choice.

I'll take the 3rd rounder next year.

if the rangers have the option they'd send a 4th rounder this year because next years draft is said to be deeper and a 3rd round pick is better than a 4th rounder...but it won't be a choice of a team, there is some condition set up where if X happens they get 1 pick and if X doesn't happen then they get the other

I'm flying blind here, but my guess is that it's a choice. You get either the lower round pick now, or the higher round pick later. My guess is that it will all depend on what is available when the Ranger's 4th rounder is being used. If there is a player the Leafs really want (or no player the Rangers really want, if it's Rangers choice) the option will be exercised and Toronto will make the pick. Otherwise, they'll wait until next year.

These sorts of things happen with some regularity, I believe.
