You would be lucky to get a roster player and a good prospect if he isn't signed to an extension. Thornton? Yeah, ok.

LOL. For an impending UFA? Get real.
Even if a conditional 1st was in place for an extension, I still wouldn't do it.

Pass.

They have the assets to get the deal done easily, it is all about re-signing him... If he ends up a free agent, every team in the league is obviously going to want him and he will go to the first decent one offering a ridiculous amount.
Yeah, I definitely wouldnt do it for a rental deal but I dont see them taking Frolov either for a rental. They are going to want someone under contract from our roster, a blue chip prospect and at least a 1st, maybe two. We'd definitely need to get that extension. If he hits the open market there isnt many teams that could afford him anyway. I see TOR, EDM, LA, NYI, COL being the only ones with the cap space to take on his contract, maybe NAS or CLB. From those teams the only ones that are close to ready to compete for the playoffs would be LA, NAS, CLB and obviously that would be the reason why he'd be leaving ATL. NAS is a small market team that I dont think would shell out that kind of contract, CLB still needs to resign Brassard, Voracek and find a center for Nash unless Brassard can step up and are not known for shelling out big contracts other than Nash. LA would be the likely destination IF he makes it to FA.

You are crazy. Kovalchuk is a top 5 forward in the league... I would pack Johnson's bags and drive him to the airport. If anyone was actually dumb enough to trade Kovy for Johnson straight up, you don't question it, you do it

Putting aside how ludicrous it would be to trade Thornton for Kovalchuk, you think that San Jose would need to add assets to make the deal work?

Try the other way around.

Thornton is the better player, and he is signed to a longer contract. His cap hit is also less than what Kovalchuk would probably demand, by at least 2 mil a year.

This.

The whole point of us getting Kovy is for him to play with Thornton. For us to trade Thornton AND Couture in the same package, I think it needs to be Kovy AND Little or Bogosian. Especially if Kovy isnt resigned.

Your other offers arent really that good either.

Not sure if Waddell would even be able to get the word "NO" out before he hung up the phone.

Kovys going to be paid over 2.5 mil more than Heatley, and is barely better.

Hmm, in order to save a little money, DW decides to take back the guy who killed one of our players in a reckless car accident, requested a trade, and then boasted about how happy he was to finally be playing in a hockey town...

Or we attempt to hang onto the face of the franchise and the Captain of the team and possibly lose him as a UFA.

If the only two options on the table are to trade Heatley for Kovalchuk or lose him to free agency, we pass on the trade 8 days a week.
