At the deadline, if the Thrashers look out of it...

Kovalchuk for Neuvirth+ 2nd

Caps get a lot of firepower + Ovies bff on the tail end of a contract, Atlanta gets a bright young goaltending prospect from a team that already has Semyon Varlamov waiting to take over the #1 spot, and an extra draft pick.

I guess it just depends how good Neuvirth continues to look, because you never know with prospects....

Yes! Kovy may be an amazing player, not denying that but... He will be a UFA at the end of next season, and could possibly leave Fla if he wanted too leaving us with nothing. Horton is a great forward who could finally break out and be a 40 goal scorer, with a great contract. Matthias is a great center prospect who can easily become a 2nd line center, if not 1st if given proper ice time. I keep hearing that the 2010 draft will be another deep draft, so you get to add anothe great prospect from that draft, or use it as possible trade bait.

to ATL: Thornton and Couture

to ATL: Hodgson and some other dudez

to ATL: Kessel, salary dump

I dont know, throw some out there
A true Atlanta fan wouldn't even entertain trading away Ilya Kovalchuk until the word comes directly from Kovy's mouth that he doesn't want to stay.

You disappoint me.

I still uphold my original offer of Rozsival, Dubinsky, McDonagh, Kreider and a 1st for an extended Kovalchuk.

Patrick O'Sullivan, Andrew Cogliano, Ladislav Smid, Jordan Eberle, 1st '10

The scary thing, the Oilers can do that and not even feel the loss of depth.

I'd do this ... I would add a 1st rounder if he ends up signing an extension in San Jose.

How is Kovalchuk worth more than Thornton?

Trade him at the deadline for a first and a good roster player then resign him on July 1, 2010.

How is he not? He is one of the most consistent goal scorers around, a top 5 forward, he is a step above Heatley without any of the baggage. He is like a step or two down from Ovechkin, this is a major player on the market. Thornton is a playmaker and Kovy is a one of the best goalscorers in the league. He is also 4 years younger than Thornton.

It will be for serious dollars and term, but I fully expect the Thrashers to sign Kovalchuk this season.

What the hell's wrong with you ALG? From what we've seen/heard this offseason we've been given more evidence to lead us to believe that he will stay in atlanta. Now you make this thread and say you think he's out?

Consistent? Consistenty inconsistent, perhaps! He seems to vary between 40 and 50 goals/year. Goal-scoring tends to be like that, I will give you. Iginla, Heatley, Gaborik, all seem to lack consistency. However, you said he is "one of the most consistent goal scorers around," if anything, he is just as consistent as any other player.

Thornton is an exceptional playmaker and is a better playmaker than Kovvy is a goalscorer. Why do you call Kovalchuk one of the best goalscorers while implying Thornton is "just" a playmaker, and an average one at that? Thornton has led the league in assists three times the past four years, battling flu and injury, and has had back-to-back 90 point seasons, a feat only previously attained by Gretzky and Lemieux. Thornton is not only defensively competent, he is defensively above-average, has led the Sharks in playoff scoring 3 of four seasons, is signed to a great contract where he took a big discount, and has won the Art Ross and Hart in the past few years. He has been top 10 in scoring every year since 2003-2004 and top 5 in scoring 4 of those 5 years.

Other than him being younger, I can't really see why he is worth more than Thornton.

He is making 7.5 this year even though I believe the cap hit is only around 6 million. I could see him asking for 9 million/year; Atlanta won't but should pass on that. Considering their internal cap, that really hurts their ability to field a well-rounded team.

He's not, but Kovy won't sign an awesome contract like JT did. 7.2m for the best playmaker in the game? Bargain.

Kovy will want the big bucks and won't be taking a home-town discount.

On that topic, I think it's kind of funny when good players take insane contracts. We all say "sure, I'd take it, free money!" but it is very short sighted. Look at Campbell for instance. He's a damn good player, but his contract makes him look like a POS. He'll drag his team down and if they trade him, only bottom feeders will be able to afford him.

I'd much rather sign a solid, reasonable, contract with a good team. Better for the player in the long term (if they care about winning). Greed doesn't work that way I guess.

As somebody else pointed out, the Caps will be over the well, cap
Somehow Nylander would need to end up on that train to ATL, if nothing else for pure salary dump.

I agree though, Semin and Fleischmann would be good return. Much better then Christinsen and Armstrong for Hossa.

But being a Boston Bruins fan, I will have nighmares about the B's playing the Caps

Imagine that PP unit: Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble and Kovalchuk-Green on the point.
