Best UFAs of next year - Who would you want?

Unfortunately I got this list straight from a blog of Eklunds but who are your targets for UFA next offseason?

Forwards

Ilya Kovalchuk - obviously #1 on everyones list but going to cost us a lot and probably not being able to resign Frolov, but obviously an upgrade.
Patrick Marleau - if he cant lead SJ to a cup than I dont think he'd lead LA to one
Paul Kariya - honestly one of my favorite players, even though he was an ex-duck, but would like to see how he recovers from injury
Olli Jokinen - not a playoff guy
Marc Savard - at the top of my list on my wants, could realistically come to LA and be our 1A/B second line center.
Pavol Demitra - not again
Alexander Frolov - hopefully he resigns but if he doesnt there are plenty of other options
Milan Hejduk - wouldnt mind him as a second line sniping winger
Ray Whitney
Antoine Vermette
Saku Koivu
Matthew Lombardi
Chris Higgins
Marek Svatos - skilled but injury prone
Tomas Holmstrom - getting old and not as effective

Id have to see Stoll or Handzus being moved if they were to sign Savard and then promoting Lewis into our 3rd line Center role.

Savard 4 years for 19 Million, front loaded? 6.0-5.0-4.5-4.0

Just give us Kovalchuk... Though he may never reach free agency. I hope that Dean is prepared to throw down a pretty package for him and get an extension in front of him or included in the trade if he is put on the trading block. That is my only wish list. All of our other forwards are signed beyond this upcoming season other than Frolov - and I would pack his bags for Kovalchuk... Add a couple of prospects, our 2010 first rounder, Frolov, and a conditional 2011 first rounder if he doesn't re-sign.

Oh I was talking about signing in the offseason, not via trade, but thats probably what would have to happen to get Kovy here. Dont see him making it to the open market.

Yeah, if he reaches free agency, we are in trouble. I don't think Dean has the initiative to throw down the deal required to land him in the summer. I'd go for the sure bet and blow him out of the water in a trade. We aren't going to draft anyone better with those first rounders, but an extension would have to be in place in order for me to include them...

I really have no interest in any of those players except Kovalchuk and that seems like a bit of a stretch. Just re-sign Frolov!

I see some team giving Atlanta some ridiculously stupid deal and then him walking after the season is over ala Hossa. Thats the only thing I see being a problem with Kovy to LA. LA cant take afford that kind of hit to our system withouth an extension. DL will never allow that to happen.

If we can't re-sign Fro I'd make a run at Kovy.

Re-signing the Loaf makes the most sense. Hopefully DL sticks to his guns and leaves some room for future deals.

In the end, this is the best bet, and the smartest.

Oh, and I would LOVE to have Marc Savard here. He's a great, underrated player everywhere he goes.

It would be in Kovalchuk's best interest to sign a deal this year. Because the most a player can sign for is 20% of the cap.

That would be $11.36 million/year this season.

If he waits until next year and the cap drops to $52 million then the most he could get is $10.4 million / year.

So I wonder if his agent has explained that to him.

I think it's strange that everyone writes off Olli Jokinen as a "non-playoff" performer after his first time making the playoffs, and with a team he's been on for less than a year. I'm not saying he's high on my list, just saying, I think the guy gets more heat than he deserves in this regard.

On topic, I think Savard would be awesome. Guy is a primo playmaker, and could easily give us two deadly scoring lines.

Kovalchuck is a gimme, but doubt it will happen.

Give me Savard.

This guy is ridiculously underrated, and could be had at a more reasonable price.

When's the last we had a legit 1st and 2nd line center combo?

Ok.. didn't realize Savard was on the list. i'd take him for sure. But I'm not sure that is a viable option until Handzus' contract runs out or one of Stoll or handzus could be moved. I'm sure they could play one of them on the wing. That would also mean Frolov is as good as gone.

Savard, Jokinen, or Kovalchuk.

Stoll, Handzus, or Frolov would have to go depending on which one we'd get. Savard/Jokinen would allow Schenn and Loktionov a bit of development time.

I'm sure the Rangers are going to try and push for one of those guys though.

Doesn't Handzus have a NMC?

Doubtful, at best. He should get a Gaborik-type contract. 5 years, 7.5 per.

1. Kovalchuk - true Superstar Top 10 NHL player

- if we cant get him, I would go after

2. Savard -Underated point producer Scary 1-2-3 punch at center

-no matter if we or if we dont get one of the above I would go after

3. Higgins - awesome 3rd line LW, scoring, hitting, poor mans Brown.

Some people may question Higgins but wth teams so close it may be the secondary scoring that wins games.
