Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen in 2010

You have 2 decisions.

Modano retires or re-signs, and Lehtinen retires or re-signs. Instead of voting on a contract, Iíll just go with a $2.5 million cap hit for both.

I have a feeling Lehtinen will have another injury filled season. I just donít have any confidence in him staying healthy. Nieuwendyk will walk away this time.

I think Modano will have a successful season as far as 40 year old players go. He has so much to play for (making the Olympic squad, last shot at Stanley Cup). Heíll put up around 40 points and fall short of the Cup. Mo will make one last run in 2010-11.

I'm expecting both to retire after this season.

lehtinen i hate to say seems to be falling apart. I could see him playing another year or two but i really think his body is going to tell him to quit. Modano on the other hand seems to be holding up better physically. He certainly appears to have difficulty with motivation, but I think he will find enough to play for a few more years. The stars have alot of good young offensive talent that should help envigorate him. I think he will toy with retiring again but sign on for another year.

I originally would have agreed with this sentiment about Mo, however I think he will retire next after seeing his friends and rivals back out of the league this year (Roenick and Sakic respectively). Its his turn.

I think the bigger impetus to retire will come from 2 things:
- No more Olympics.
- The hassle of contract negotiation.

I'm going to wait to see how they play this season (for Lehtinen, in particular) before I decide on what I think they'll do. If Lehtinen can play in 70+ games and is his usual, top-quality self, then I think he might stick around.

I find it less likely Modano will return, mostly because I think he's mentally done, but I've never quite been able to figure out what goes on in that head of his.
