Jiri Novotny

Because he is a free agent and spent his past two seasons with Columbus I was wondering if you as Blue Jackets fans could describe his style of play and what he brings to a team. Thank you in advance.

If you need a guy to sit in your pressbox and be a healthy scratch, Jiri's your man. That's the role he seemed to play most here.

You could have buttered him up a little, the op not Jiri.

Jiri proved competent (read: not excellent or even proficient) when called on in a variety of roles. In other words, not good enough to really contribute but not a total waste, either. The press box is an ideal place for him.

Something of the consummate thirteenth forward, really.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Jiri is a tweener. Too good for the AHL, not quite good enough for the NHL. In other words, a perfect fit for the Atlanta Thrashers!

Novotny is very good defensively. Showed some flashes of offensive talent when he first arrived, but that died off pretty fast. Frankly, I think we'd be a stronger team going into next season if we had him as our fourth line center.

I agree, somewhat. I moreso wish that Chimera/Boll/Torres were centers. But Novotny is definitely a capable defensive forward. He played on our second line for half of the season two years ago. Although he never could maintain the offensive side of his game, he seemed to understand that he would have to hit to earn his ice-time last season.
