Sigh. As I said in the Dallas thread, Sens fans are content to have him on our team.

I agree Phoenix doesn't make this trade (bankruptcy reasons), but the value is comparable; especially since Mueller and especially Hanzal aren't exactly top flight prospects (that would be Turris, on the Yotes roster), and Upshall has bounced around an awful lot.

A better proposal would be:
To Ottawa:
Mueller ($0.875m) (RFA after 09/10)
Lombardi ($2.35m) (UFA after 09/10)
Jovonoski ($6.5m) (salary... personally I hate Jovonoski)
1st Round Pick (2010)
Salary: $9.75m

To Phoenix:
Dany Heatley ($7.5m) (UFA 14/15... also note his ACTUAL salary for the year is only $4m, so bankruptcy judge might approve)
Chris Kelly ($2.125m) (UFA 12/13)
Alexander Picard ($0.8m) (RFA after 09/10)
Salary: $10.425m (but actual salary is lower)

-=-=-

Benefits for Both Teams:
PHX gives up Mueller and Lombardi, but picks up Heatley and Kelly... Kelly is passable in Lombardi's role. They also give up Jovonoski but get young Picard in his place. The 1st round pick evens up the fact that Mueller had 36 pts last year, despite all his potential, and Jovonoski is really a salary add in (and overpriced).

Ottawa gives up Heatley, but gets a top six forward (Mueller), and potentially Lombardi can play a 2B/3A role. It also allows them to explore getting rid of Fisher if he can play the 2nd line center role, or alternatively adds a speedy line. He's basically an older Vermette, but we lost Vermette in the CBJ trade. Jovonoski gives us another defenseman, making our lines:
Jovo - Kuba
Volchenkov - Phillips
Lee - Campoli

Which is a solid enough top 6, even though Lee and Jovo should be switched, salary dictates Jovo will be there... also, since his deal expires in 2 years, it'll give our young d time to develop.

What about :

Ed Jovanovski » D $6,500,000 + Jim Vandermeer » D $2,300,000 + Radim Vrbata » F $3,000,000 (Total = 11.8)

for

Dany Heatley » F $7,500,000 + Anton Volchenkov » D $2,500,000 + Alexandre Picard » D $800,000 (Total = 10.8)

I know it's not very interesting for Phoenix but at least they would save 1M$ of cap hit with that deal, plus they'd get a young PP specialist on a cheap contract and a physical/blocking machine

Ottawa would finally get a true #1 D-man on a cheap contract and a good goal scorer on a cheap contract, along with a physical D-man on a cheap contract. They would finally get rid of the team's cancer and could finally move on. Get "er done Murray!

Uhm, no?

Volchenkov > Jovonoski as far as the Senators are concerned.... he's much younger, much cheaper and really brings MORE defensive play... Jovonoski is no longer the all-round powerhouse he used to be (despite being only 32).

Ottawa is basically giving up the best 2 players in this deal.

I wouldn't make the trade with Heatley for the PHX package straight up, without "throwing in" Picard and Volchenkov.

Horrible trade for Ottawa. Jovo is a decent number 1 but not great...Vandy is nothing but a number 6 making $2M+ and Vrbata may be decent but not at $3M and not on this team.

You want Hanzal and/or Mueller? Do you have cap space? Throw out an offer sheet ($4mill +) to one or both of them and see if Phoenix matches. Buttman would blow his top.

Um, that would require them to be free agents right now wouldnt it?

Sorry, I forgot to mention.. do this at the end of 09/10 season, when they're both RFA's

So we're just going to assume that they will actually be RFAs when the free agency period begins?

Wow.

Am I missing the line where Phoenix also inlcudes a 1st round pick or 2?

Steal for Phoenix. No question the Coyotes would make that trade. No chance Ottawa offers it either.

Wouldn't do anything beyond Mueller and Calgary's first for Heatley, all things (including attitude and money) considered. Not a player I think Maloney is interested in having in our locker room. If, for some reason, Reinsdorf green lights spending more then I'd look into it.

He should. I mean, after all, isn't he getting the team for free?

By reading these boards, i would assume that's about Heatley's value... a salary dump. But what do i know?
