Nasty CHL altercation(Eagles/Jackalopes)

It seems all the Youtube videos have been removed:

Apparently there was a lot of blood on the ice:

On Saturday, the Jackalopes forfeited the game in which they were leading 3-1.

Jackalopes player Dave Van Drunen suffered a broken nose and broken jaw in a third-period fight, requiring an overnight stay in a hospital, 18 screws and multiple metal plates to repair his face. Videos posted on YouTube following the game showed workers scraping a large pool of blood from the ice.

Van Drunen was hit by Colorado's Brad MacMillan midway through the final period. Eagles defenseman Mario Joly, a former Odessa player, reportedly came off the bench and challenged several Jackalopes to a fight. Those incidents prompted Odessa head coach Paul Gillis to pull his players off the ice and forfeit the game.

Maybe it was just the description here and in the link, but it seems like a really wimpy move to forfeit the game. The injury to Van Drunen doesn't seem so bad that it would shake up the players too much (most if not all hky players athletes and I think ppl in general know that noses and head injuries bleed lots). Players coming off the benches is uncalled for but it doesn't even seem from descriptions like a bench clearing out of control brawl occurred, and even then when things calm down play usually goes on.

The league agrees with you. Even though it was a pre season game the Odessa coach was suspended 3 games and the team fined. Colorado also fined and Brad MacMillan was suspended 22 games. Kinda nasty business for a pre season game though I gotta admit. 7 fights in the 3rd before that one even broke out.

That's awesome the Jackalopes organization should be punished for pulling the team off the ice for a somewhat ordinary event. Generally if things get outta hand so bad the refs and/or league officials on hand might make a decision to end, suspend, or reshedule a game.

It's appalling that Odessa players, coaching staff, and front office are being such HUGE BABIES with all this. There's some video (under the hockey fights section of HF boards) I don't see one fan in that video that looks upset, they're standing up cheering and clapping. Fights happen in hockey, sometimes line brawls, its part of the game esp with and event like a dirty sucker punch that broke the jaw and nose of the captain in a pre season game.

They're all wearing pink breast cancer awareness jerseys and the fines from game are being donated to breast cancer research. Market the game and events as a "Beat Down of Breast Cancer Night" and play hockey!! Don't pull the team off the ice and forfeit the game, ask for criminal charges, etc...

One of Odessa's owners who was at the road game did press charges at first. But CHL rules prevent charges, and thus dropped the charges. I don't mind the sucker punch so much as beating an injured player bleeding on the ice. Even in boxing they have enough sense to stitch a cut...

That is going too far, even the league agrees...
