Conversation with Dennis Williams

*WARNING* **TOTAL SPECULATION** **NOT INTENDED TO BE A RUMOR**

Dennis Williams was just talking on WGR about the fact that he believes the Sabres are going to save up and make a run at Patrick Kane next year. The conversation was pretty interesting but he then posed the question if you'd do it knowing it'd cost you 4 first round picks. Everyone knows that Chicago is going to be up against it next year with the cap and all the bright young stars they have.

Just thought I'd put it out there for conversations sake. What say you?

No. Too small. I don't care how skilled he is. We don't need a midget on our top line. It's not so much the picks that bother me, but we need more size.

All I can think of is some sarcastic remark about "costing a lot of coins"...

I don't see it happening. I'd rather have a young d-man from CHI than Kane as long as BUF has Connolly locked up for 2 years and Roy for several, unless Roy is moved to wing. But if it happened, I wouldn't complain. (Obvious statements.)

I'd honestly take Seabrook before Keith.

If he matures, maybe. But not for 4 firsts.

Unfortunately, he'd create a logjam at RW (is that right? He's left handed, does that mean he plays on his off-side?) and prevent Kassian from playing in the top 6, although we could always trade/move Pominville/Kane/Kassian to LW or something if we absolutely had to.

Additionally, if Connolly stays healthy and we can't resign him, we're kind of ****ed for centers with size in the prospect pool (Adam, if he hasn't fully converted to wing is pretty much it), although there is a lot of talent at center in 2011's free agency. Roy/Ennis/Pominville/Kane just lacks a whole lot of grit, unless Roy turns into a leader.

Exactly.

I suppose some kind of trade could be worked out, but RW is not a position where we're really deficient. The only offersheet I'd even consider right now would be for a center, or possibly a legit #1 D.

More importantly; Darcy giving up 4 first rounders? Not going to happen. Ever.

Yeah. My bad. I was mentally picturing Toews, whom I'd take over Kane 6 days a week and twice on Sundays, but that's not going to happen either.

This seems like the kind of hair brained scheme that Larry Quinn salivates over.

This team already overinvests on the wings and underinvests at center.

So, let's make the situation worse simple because Pat Kane is from South Buffalo!

I'd go after Toews before Kane.

I'd also go after an UFA center like Savard or Marleau before Kane.

Joe Pavelski, Nick Backstrom, Peter Mueller, Sam Gagner, Martin Hanzal, and Ryan Kesler are some other RFAs that might intrigue me more than Kane.

Oh yeah, Braydon Coburn, Erik Johnson, Keith, and James Wisniewski are RFA defensmen and there are a boatload of UFA-to-be on D as well.

I can see it now. Kane downtown after games, people throwing 20 cents at his face at Soho and 67 West.

He'll get in so many bar fights with his stupid cousins. He is actually probly better off not near Buffalo. I'm sure he would Love all the fame and girls all over him here in Buf.

That being said, 4 first rounders is steep, for anyone. Kane can play C or RW correct?

Is this the same dennis williams who last summer wanted to trade spacek and i believe tallinder for gionta? He went on and on about that for 2 days and I wanted to put my fist through the radio hoping he was back there somehow.

No thanks, too small (as said previously) and don't think he's mature enough to live in his hometown...probably be a "I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread here in Buffalo" kind of thing going on. Talented...yes. I'd rather spend $5 mil on a tough center.

Save up what? Their paper route money?

Even with Lydman and Tallinder's salaries coming off the books, Buffalo can afford another 5 million dollar forward like the Hawks can afford to throw another ludicrous contract to the next overvalued and overhyped UFA.

Quite frankly...we really aren't that deep at RW.

We have Pominville.

Stafford--my hunch is he'll sign a 1 year deal, and we'll be right back in this position again with him next season.

Then bottom 6 guys in Grier, Kaleta.

Out of our prospects, we have Kassian, Legault and Gogulla. While hopefully one of them will be ready to be a regular next season...it's not a given. Kassian will still have junior eligibility, Gogulla will have to show he can adapt to the NA game this season, and Legault is still quote a ways from becoming a potental regular. Most of our top forward prospects are at LW (or centers moved to LW).

So we probably could use a RW (especially depending on what happens with Stafford). I'd certainly pay the 4 1st rounders for Kane (just like how taking Vanek over the 4 first rounders makes sense)...but he'll be making a ton of money, and with Pominville already at RW, the need for an RW of Kane's calibur isn't as great. We're better off finding a solid #2 RW for cheaper.

Maybe we can just give them some former 1st rounders and call it even. How about, the rights to Zags, Paille, Persson and Stafford.

I would probably be on board for it, but I don't think it is at all, in any way, a remote possibility.... AT ALL

Deadline day trade maybe, but not as an RFA. Darcy Regier will not give up 4 1st round picks(if he's still the GM then)

There aren't many players in the NHL you give up 4 1st's to get. Pat Kane is certainly not among that group.

Personally I wouldn't give up 2 1st's for him.

Why not just wait until he's a UFA? I always assumed that is when we would get him.

Nah, I'll pass on Kane. I'm not a big fan of youngsters who beat up the elderly.
