The leafs have 2 mil to spend...

what should they do between now and training camp with that 2 mil

should we sign a player and give him 3 mil plus
who would you sign?
should we be patient and wait to take advantage of a team in cap trouble etc

none of the above. Unless it's something for practically at little cost (not happening), you go with the roster you have.

That's my take on Burkes comments this morning. Move out a D and take on 2mil+D's salary in return.

Examples:
White(850K) -> Top Six Forward (2.8mil)
MVR (2.9mil) -> Top Six Forward (4.9mil)

etc.

The forward would have to have one year remaining because taking on a overpaid player for multiple seasons would screw up our cap for next season.

Yeah my only thought is that if Burke can move one of the d the top 6 guy we get back won't be a very exciting one.

We can also demote a few players to save cap space. Sending Finger, MVR, Stempniak, etc.. down will save some money and not have a dramatic impact on the team.

Two guys on our bottom pairing and a winger on our third line, get rid of them and we save.. $8.9 million against the cap. Fletcher came in to clean up this mess, add in Tucker's $1M and all he did was leave Burke a $10 million hole.

save the cap room... better to leave some room just incase anybody decent gets put on waivers... or better yet, re-entry waivers.

More like 5.7 million according to the cap thread. And there will definitely be a couple bodies moved out so I would think they could take on a $6 million contract without sending anyone down and still have some daylight.

It's an expiring asset though which has to be used within the year.

Just depends whether we want to take the chance of any entry-level bonuses carrying over to next year.

I think that the cap-space that is currently available should be saved so that when roster players get injured and call-ups are required, the space will be there.

There is no real need for Burke to be spending every single penny's-worth of cap-space this year anyway. Besides, I don't think the Leafs have any open contract slots as it is. And, in order to open up more contract slots and cap-space, bodies will have to be removed one way or another.

In any event, Burke needs to be very careful in his management of the cap-space, especilly if he wants to "buy draft picks" again.

Yeah, Capgeek is the most reliable source, they constantly update and have good sources for the numbers. Plus they have some cool features and calculators that most other sites don't.

Though looking at it, it seems like they've put Frogren on the non-roster end. Assuming he's one of the guys battling for a spot in camp that puts the Leafs closer to $1m cap space.

A great feature Capgeek has is the checkboxes so you can pick which players you think will be on the team and calculate the total cap hit of that.
